Objective:  We aimed to estimate the density of L. apiculatum nests and to identify habitat variables associated with the presence of the insect in scrubland vegetation in north-central area of Mexico.  Materials and methods:  The coordinates of 201 nests and a vegetation layer were used to create a distribution map of L. apiculatum in crassicule scrub, desert microphyll scrub and rosetophyll scrub. The density of nests was estimated in 27 transects of 200 m, on which circular plots were located in which 19 habitat variables were measured. The association between these and the presence of nests was determined with a canonical correspondence analysis.  Results and discussion:  Crassicule scrub had the highest density of nests with 4.8 nests&#8729;ha-1, while in the desert microphyll scrub and rosetophyll scrub had 2.2 and 2.3 nests&#8729;ha-1. The presence of nests is associated with slope direction (northwest), rock, bare soil, and soil type (eutric leptosol + lithic leptosol [medium texture]), but not with the presence of agaves. It is likely that the occurrence of nests is explained by the availability of resources by vegetation type.  Conclusions:  Nest density is heterogeneous depending on the type of vegetation. The ecological information collected from L. apiculatum is relevant and useful to conduct future experiments with artificial nests that contribute to sustainable use in the north-central region of Mexico.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Introducción:  Un insecto de interés económico en México es la hormiga Liometopum apiculatum Mayr, ya que sus larvas son extraídas con fines alimenticios para el hombre.  Objetivo:  Estimar la densidad de nidos de L. apiculatum e identificar las variables del hábitat asociadas a la presencia del insecto en vegetación de matorral en el centro-norte de México. Materiales y métodos: Con las coordenadas de 201 nidos y una capa de vegetación se obtuvo un mapa de distribución de L. apiculatum en vegetación de matorral crasicaule, matorral desértico micrófilo y rosetófilo. La densidad de nidos se estimó en 27 transectos de 200 m, sobre los cuales se ubicaron parcelas circulares en las que se midieron 19 variables del hábitat. La asociación entre estas y la presencia de nidos se determinó con un análisis de correspondencia canónica.  Resultados y discusión:  El matorral crasicaule tuvo la mayor densidad de nidos con 4.8 nidos&#8729;ha-1, mientras que en el matorral desértico micrófilo y matorral desértico rosetófilo tuvieron 2.2 y 2.3 nidos&#8729;ha-1. La presencia de nidos está asociada a la dirección de la pendiente (noroeste), roca, suelo desnudo y tipo de suelo (Leptosol éutrico + Leptosol lítico [textura media]), pero no con la presencia de agaves. Es probable que la ocurrencia de nidos se explique por la disponibilidad de recursos por tipo de vegetación.  Conclusiones:  La densidad de nidos es heterogénea por tipo de vegetación. La información ecológica obtenida de L. apiculatum es relevante y útil para conducir experimentos futuros con nidos artificiales que contribuyan al aprovechamiento sustentable en el centro-norte de México.]]></p></abstract>
