Objective: To evaluate the effect of log size and distances on manual loading productivity in forests in the region of El Salto, Durango, Mexico.  Materials and methos:  A total of 738 manual loading cycles of 4 ft (1.22 m) logs were timed using the &#8216;back-to-zero&#8217; method. Log volume and loading distances were taken by direct in-situ measurement. Average log diameters were divided into three categories and loading distances into four. The system yield was determined by relating log volume to total loading time.  Results and discussion:  Manual loading yield was established from 3.80 to 16.42 m3&#8729;h-1, influenced by log diameter and loading distances, because 82 % of the loaded volume corresponds to logs with diameters from 10 to 30 cm, which are loaded every 12 s; logs larger than 30 cm require 27 s. Also, 91 % of the loading volume is carried out in the first 10 m of distance from the truck and takes 15 s per log, and, at longer distances, 35 s.  Conclusions:  It is possible to increase the performance of the operation by considering maximum loading distances in the order of 10 m.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Introducción:  En algunas regiones forestales de México es común que la carga de trocería con dimensiones cortas se realice utilizando la fuerza humana; sin embargo, el nivel de rendimiento de esta operación ha sido poco documentado.  Objetivo: Evaluar el efecto del tamaño de los trocitos y las distancias en el rendimiento de la carga manual en bosques de la región de El Salto, Durango, México.  Materiales y métodos:  Se cronometraron 738 ciclos de carga manual de trocitos de 4 ft (1.22 m) mediante el método &#8216;vuelta a cero&#8217;. El volumen de las trozas y las distancias de carga se obtuvieron por medición directa in situ. Los diámetros promedio de las trozas se dividieron en tres categorías y las distancias de carga en cuatro. El rendimiento de la operación se obtuvo relacionando el volumen de las trozas con el tiempo total de carga.  Resultados y discusión:  El rendimiento de la carga manual se estableció de 3.80 a 16.42 m3&#8729;h-1, influenciado por el diámetro de las trozas y las distancias de carga, pues 82 % del volumen cargado corresponde a trozas con diámetros de 10 a 30 cm que se cargan cada 12 s; trozas mayores de 30 cm requieren 27 s. Asimismo, 91 % del volumen de la carga se realiza en los primeros 10 m de distancia del camión en 15 s por troza y, a mayor distancia, en 35 s.  Conclusiones:  Es posible aumentar el rendimiento de la operación considerando distancias máximas de carga del orden de los 10 m.]]></p></abstract>
