Objective:  To identify the effects of fertilizer doses on the growth of Pinus patula Schiede ex Schltdl. &amp; Cham. under nursery conditions, and survival and growth under field conditions.  Materials and methods:  A total of eight fertilization treatments with eight (Multicote Agri®) and 12 months (Multicote®) nutrient release times were evaluated at the GUMAIR nursery in Acaxochitlán, Hidalgo. Plants were established in the field and fertilization treatments were incorporated to evaluate survival and growth (height and diameter) after a year.  Results and discussion: Under nursery conditions, plants with 8 g&#8729;L-1 of eight-month fertilizer in combination with 4 and 6 g&#8729;L-1 of 12-month fertilizer release had the highest values (P &#8804; 0.0001) in all variables. The combination of 4 g&#8729;L-1 of eight-month fertilizer and 4 g&#8729;L-1 of 12-month fertilizer release had the same effect as these treatments in diameter, root and shoot dry weight and Dickson's quality index under nursery conditions, while under field conditions it caused higher survival (95 %) after a year of planting. The effect of these three treatments in the nursery agreed with the higher growth and N concentration in foliage under field conditions.  Conclusion:  Plants with desired morphological characteristics and better field performance were obtained with 4 g&#8729;L-1 of eight-month fertilizer and 4 g&#8729;L-1 of 12-month release.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Introducción:  El uso de fertilizantes para la producción de planta forestal en vivero mejora la calidad y favorece el desempeño en campo.  Objetivo:  Identificar los efectos de dosis de fertilización sobre el crecimiento de Pinus patula Schiede ex Schltdl. &amp; Cham. en condiciones de vivero, y la supervivencia y crecimiento en campo.  Materiales y métodos:  En el vivero GUMAIR en Acaxochitlán, Hidalgo, se evaluaron ocho tratamientos de fertilización con tiempos de ocho (Multicote Agri®) y 12 meses (Multicote®) de liberación de nutrientes. Las plantas se establecieron en campo y se incorporaron tratamientos de fertilización para evaluar supervivencia y crecimiento (altura y diámetro) después de un año.  Resultados y discusión: En vivero, las plantas con 8 g&#8729;L-1 de fertilizante de ocho meses en combinación con 4 y 6 g&#8729;L-1 de fertilizante de 12 meses de liberación mostraron los valores más altos (P &#8804; 0.0001) en todas las variables. La combinación de 4 g&#8729;L-1 de fertilizante de ocho meses y 4 g&#8729;L-1 de fertilizante de 12 meses de liberación tuvo el mismo efecto que dichos tratamientos en diámetro, peso seco radical y aéreo e índice de calidad de Dickson en vivero; mientras que en campo causó mayor supervivencia (95 %) después de un año de la plantación. El efecto de estos tres tratamientos en vivero coincidió en el mayor crecimiento y concentración de N en el follaje en campo.  Conclusión:  Las plantas con características morfológicas deseadas y mejor desempeño en campo se obtuvieron con 4 g&#8729;L-1 de fertilizante de ocho meses y 4 g&#8729;L-1 de 12 meses de liberación.]]></p></abstract>
