Objective:  To evaluate the thematic accuracy of hotspots and wildfire records in a region of Michoacán de Ocampo, Mexico.  Materials and methods: Rapid Eye high spatial resolution images were classified to detect fire scars. The images were crossed with hotspot maps from the MODIS sensor, processed by the National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (CONABIO), and from the MODIS, AVHRR and GOES sensors, processed by the National Meteorological Service (SMN), as well as with wildfire records from the National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR). Detection rates and confusion matrices were generated to assess accuracy.  Results and discussion:  The detection rate was higher with the CONABIO MODIS sensor (&gt;75 %) in categories greater than 50 ha. The overall accuracy of hotspots was 62 %; however, the errors of omission (underestimation) and commission (overestimation) were 85 and 34 %, respectively. The fires reported by CONAFOR lack spatial coincidence with respect to scars, so the accuracy analysis was discarded.  Conclusion: The use of hotspots, according to detection rates, is ideal for fires exceeding 50 ha. The thematic accuracy of hotspots and fire records should be evaluated at the beginning of a study.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Introducción: Los programas de monitoreo de incendios forestales incursionaron en México a finales del siglo pasado; sin embargo, no existen estudios que reporten su fiabilidad en la detección de incendios y puntos de calor.  Objetivo:  Evaluar la fiabilidad temática de los puntos de calor y registros de incendios forestales en una región de Michoacán de Ocampo, México.  Materiales y métodos: Se clasificaron imágenes de alta resolución espacial Rapid Eye para detectar cicatrices de incendios. Las imágenes se cruzaron con mapas de puntos de calor del sensor MODIS, procesados por la Comisión Nacional para el Conocimiento y Uso de la Biodiversidad (CONABIO), y de los sensores MODIS, AVHRR y GOES, procesados por el Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN), así como con registros de incendios forestales de la Comisión Nacional Forestal (CONAFOR). Se generaron tasas de detección y matrices de confusión para evaluar la fiabilidad.  Resultados y discusión:  La tasa de detección fue mayor con el sensor MODIS de la CONABIO (&gt;75 %) en las categorías mayores de 50 ha. La fiabilidad global de los puntos de calor fue 62 %; no obstante, los errores de omisión (subestimación) y comisión (sobrestimación) representaron 85 y 34 %, respectivamente. Los incendios reportados por la CONAFOR carecen de coincidencia espacial con respecto a las cicatrices, por lo que el análisis de fiabilidad fue descartado.  Conclusión: El uso de los puntos de calor, de acuerdo con las tasas de detección, es ideal para incendios que superen las 50 ha. La fiabilidad temática de los puntos de calor y de los registros de incendios debe evaluarse al inicio de una investigación.]]></p></abstract>
