Objectives:  To apply participatory methods for estimating carbon stocks in community owned forests and to identify land uses and conflicts that may influence the maintenance of these forests.  Materials and methods:  Participatory mapping workshops were held in four communities. Members were instructed in the measurement of tree-size parameters to estimate aboveground carbon in forest biomass. Work was conducted in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, a priority area for REDD+ in Mexico.  Results and discussion:  Awareness-raising, acceptance and flexibility processes were identified towards the incorporation of participatory tools, both for future participation in carbon markets and to improve existing forest management practices of the communities. Carbon values &#8203;&#8203;obtained through participatory methods were consistent with those identified by experts for the forest types included in this study. Averages of 112, 98 and 91 Mg C·ha-1 were estimated in conifer-dominated, broadleaf-dominated and mixed-species forest sites, respectively. In some communities there are conflicts over land ownership boundaries and there are some internal conflicts where community agreements have not been respected.  Conclusion:  Participatory methods of tree carbon mapping and measurement support forest management through the generation of reliable data that can facilitate community management of resources. Carbon stocks were associated more with the degree of forest conservation, than with vegetation type, and forest disturbance is more associated with internal and external conflicts than with forest management practices.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Introducción:  La participación comunitaria es una estrategia efectiva para el manejo forestal y la gestión de servicios ecosistémicos.  Objetivos:  Aplicar métodos participativos para la estimación de reservas de carbono en bosques comunitarios e identificar los usos de suelo y conflictos que pueden influir en su mantenimiento.  Materiales y métodos:  Se realizaron talleres de mapeo participativo en cuatro comunidades; los miembros fueron instruidos en la medición de variables dasométricas, para estimar carbono en biomasa forestal aérea. Se trabajó en la Reserva de la Biosfera Mariposa Monarca, una región de atención prioritaria para REDD+ en México.  Resultados y discusión:  Se identificaron procesos de sensibilización, aceptación y flexibilidad hacia la incorporación de herramientas participativas, tanto para una posible participación en mercados de carbono como para mejorar las prácticas de manejo forestal de las comunidades. Los valores de carbono obtenidos mediante los métodos participativos concuerdan con los identificados por los expertos para estos tipos de bosques. Se estimaron promedios de 112, 98 y 91 Mg C·ha-1 en sitios del bosque dominados por coníferas, latifoliadas y mixtos, respectivamente. En algunas comunidades existen conflictos por límites de propiedad de la tierra y conflictos internos donde los acuerdos comunitarios no se han respetado.  Conclusión:  Los métodos participativos de mapeo y medición del carbono arbóreo apoyan el manejo forestal a través de la generación de datos confiables que facilitan la gestión comunitaria de los recursos. Las reservas dependen más del grado de conservación del sitio que del tipo de vegetación, y la perturbación del bosque está más asociada a conflictos internos y externos que al manejo forestal.]]></p></abstract>
