However, it is after an economic assessment, when such services become more relevant.  Objective:  To estimate the values of three ecosystem services in the forestland around Quebec City and compare these values with those obtained in other studies.  Materials and methods:  The total cost of three ecosystem services (water supply and quality, air quality and forest habitat) was estimated to represent the value of a green belt around Quebec City. For this, four valuation methods were used: replacement cost for water supply, cost-effectiveness for water quality, avoided cost for air quality and market price for forest habitat.  Results and discussion:  The economic value corresponding to the three ecosystem services (water supply and quality, air quality and habitat) was USD 4 539.48·ha-1. Therefore, the total economic value for 15,998.96 ha of the forest area around Quebec City was USD 72 627 025.00·year-1. The variation between the estimates and the values reported in other studies were the result of different valuation methods, systems created by man as a replacement for the function of the forest ecosystem, the level of efficiency among the forest systems and the price sources of market used for the valuation of the ecosystem.  Conclusion: The type of forest mass, the valuation method and the study context were relevant criteria determining the ecosystem&#8217;s economic value.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Introducción:  Los servicios ecosistémicos proporcionan beneficios a los seres humanos; sin embargo, es después de una valoración económica cuando dichos servicios adquieren mayor relevancia.  Objetivo:  Estimar los valores de tres servicios ecosistémicos del área forestal alrededor de la ciudad de Quebec y compararlos con los obtenidos en otros estudios.  Materiales y métodos:  Se calculó el costo total de tres servicios ecosistémicos (suministro y calidad del agua, calidad del aire y hábitat forestal) para representar el valor de un cinturón verde alrededor de la ciudad de Quebec. Para ello se utilizaron cuatro métodos de valoración: costo de reposición para el suministro de agua, costo-efectividad para la calidad del agua, costo evitado para la calidad del aire y precio de mercado para el hábitat forestal.  Resultados y discusión:  El valor económico correspondiente a los tres servicios ecosistémicos (suministro y calidad del agua, calidad del aire y hábitat) fue de 4 539.48 USD·ha-1. Por lo tanto, el valor económico total para 15 998.96 ha del área forestal alrededor de la ciudad de Quebec fue 72 627 025.00 USD·año-1. La variación entre las estimaciones y los valores reportados en otros estudios fueron el resultado de diferentes métodos de valoración, los sistemas creados por el hombre como reemplazo de la función del ecosistema forestal, el nivel de eficiencia entre los sistemas forestales y las fuentes de precios de mercado utilizadas para la valoración del ecosistema.
