<self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S2007-40182017000300341&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&amp;pid=S2007-40182017000300341&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_pdf&amp;pid=S2007-40182017000300341&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Introduction: The collapse of the "El Espinar" Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Puno, Peru, has resulted in much of the wastewater being discharged into Lake Titicaca&#8217;s Inner Bay, generating pollution and loss of well-being in the population.  Objective:  To estimate the willingness to pay (WTP) for improvements in the wastewater treatment system in Puno, Peru.  Materials and methods:  WTP was estimated through data obtained in a survey of 393 heads-of-household. The contingent valuation method&#8217;s linear and logarithmic models, with referendum and double-bounded questions, were used.  Results and discussion:  A mean WTP of 4.38 PEN (1.46 USD) per household was estimated. WTP was affected by socioeconomic variables related to the household budget, educational level and geographical location of the home. Residents of the southern zone, the main area affected by the pollution caused by the wastewater discharge, have higher WTP than those living in the city&#8217;s central and northern areas.  Conclusion:  Despite the belief in the low-payment culture, users are willing to pay if the benefits are obvious. With respect to the models used, the double-bounded model had greater theoretical consistency of results.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Introducción: El colapso de la Planta de Tratamiento de Aguas Servidas (PTAR) &#8220;El Espinar&#8221; en Puno, Perú, ha ocasionado que gran parte de las aguas residuales se viertan en la Bahía Interior del Lago Titicaca, generando contaminación y pérdida de bienestar en la población.  Objetivo:  Estimar la disponibilidad a pagar (DAP) por mejoras en el sistema de tratamiento de aguas residuales en Puno, Perú.  Materiales y métodos:  La DAP se estimó a través de los datos obtenidos en una encuesta a 393 jefes de familia. Se utilizaron los modelos lineal y logarítmico del método de valoración contingente, con preguntas referéndum y doble límite.  Resultados y discusión:  Se estimó una DAP media de 4.38 PEN (1.46 USD) por hogar. La DAP fue afectada por variables socioeconómicas relacionadas con el presupuesto del hogar, nivel educativo y localización geográfica de la vivienda. Los habitantes de la zona sur, principal zona afectada por la contaminación del vertimiento de aguas residuales, tienen mayor DAP que los habitantes de la zona centro y norte de la ciudad.  Conclusión:  A pesar de la creencia de la baja cultura de pago, los usuarios están dispuestos a pagar si los beneficios son evidentes. Con respecto a los modelos utilizados, el modelo doble límite lineal tuvo mayor consistencia teórica de los resultados.]]></p></abstract>
