Mexican production yields 1,487,102 t in an area of 47,952 ha. In this study, the nematode associated with onion cv. Cirrus was morphologically and molecularly identified, as well as the effect of fluensulfone (1.75, 2, and 2.25 L.ha-1) and fenamiphos (7 L.ha-1) on the nematode population and crop damage, were evaluated. The species associated with onion plants was Meloidogyne incognita. The preventive application of fluensulfone decreased the negative effect of M. incognita on onion yield, providing a good control on the nematode population higher than Fenamiphos. At 60 days after sowing (das), Fluensulfone (2 and 2.25 L.ha-1) reduced the population and damage caused by M. incognita by 76-78 % and 72-80 %, respectively in comparison with untreated plants. At 90 das, root galling was less than 15 %. Plants treated with Fluensulfone (2.25 L.ha-1) and Fenamiphos increased the production of commercial bulbs by up to 14 % compared with untreated plants. Hence, the application of Fluensulfone for the M. incognita management in onion crops is recommended, as part of an integrated management plan of root-knot nematodes.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN La cebolla es una hortaliza ampliamente cultivada en el mundo, solo detrás de la papa y jitomate. México produce 1,487,102 t en un área de 47,952 ha. En este estudio, se identificó morfológica y molecularmente el nematodo asociado al cultivo de cebolla cv Cirrus, y se evaluó en campo el efecto del fluensulfone (1.75, 2 y 2.25 L.ha-1) y fenamifos (7 L.ha-1) sobre la población del nematodo y daño ocasionado en el cultivo. La especie asociada a las plantas de cebolla fue Meloidogyne incognita. La aplicación preventiva de fluensulfone redujo el efecto negativo de M. incognita sobre el rendimiento de cebolla, ejerciendo un buen control sobre la población del nematodo, ligeramente superior al fenamifos. Fluensulfone en dosis de 2 y 2.25 L.ha-1redujeron la población y el daño ocasionado por M. incognita, en un 76-78 y 72-80 % a los 60 días después de la siembra (dds) respectivamente, comparado con las plantas sin tratar. A los 90 dds, el agallamiento radical fue menor al 15 % en las plantas tratadas con fluensulfone (2 y 2.25 L.ha-1). Las plantas tratadas con fluensulfone (2.25 L.ha-1) y fenamifos incrementaron la producción de bulbos comerciales hasta en un 14 %, en comparación a las plantas sin tratar. Por lo que, se recomienda la aplicación de fluensulfone para el combate de M. incognita en el cultivo de cebolla, como parte de un plan de manejo integral de nematodos agalladores.]]></p></abstract>
