In this industry, growing time is critical to the crop's success. This work describes the intestinal infestation by gregarines in Penaeus vannamei and evaluates a method of control of the parasite. Sampling was carried out from May-August (dry season) and August-November (rainy season) on four farms. The degree of gregarine infestation, prevalence, and their relationship with salinity was determined. Finally, we tested the commercial antiparasitic PREOXOL® (oxibendazole) at 1.5 % as a control against these parasites in commercial production. The prevalence of gregarines in both crop cycles was high, ranging between 75 and 90 % in the dry season and between 70 and 87 % in the rainy season. The degree of severity of the infestation was higher in the dry season. The salinity recorded during the dry season ranged between 26 and 47 UPS, while it was between 6 and 26 UPS in the rainy season. We found a positive correlation between the degree of severity and salinity. The antiparasitic reduced the prevalence of gregarines by more than 90 %, while the severity decreased by up to three degrees. There is a positive correlation between the degree of severity and salinity, but not with prevalence. The control method used with PREOXOL® turned out to be highly efficient in commercial shrimp production.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN La presencia de gregarinas en el cultivo de camarón está asociada con una baja tasa de crecimiento. En esta industria, el tiempo de crecimiento es fundamental para el éxito del cultivo. Este trabajo describe la infestación intestinal por gregarinas en Penaeus vannamei, y evalúa un método de control del parásito. El muestreo se realizó durante mayo-agosto (temporada seca) y agosto-noviembre (temporada de lluvias) en cuatro granjas. Se determinó el grado de infestación y la prevalencia de gregarinas y su relación con la salinidad. Finalmente, se probó el antiparasitario comercial PREOXOL® (oxibendazol) al 1.5 % como control contra estos parásitos, en la producción comercial. Se observó que la prevalencia de gregarinas en ambos ciclos de cultivo fue alta, osciló entre el 75 y el 90 % en la estación seca y entre el 70 y el 87 % en la estación lluviosa. El grado de severidad de la infestación fue mayor en la estación seca. La salinidad registrada durante la estación seca osciló entre 26 y 47 UPS, mientras que en el ciclo de lluvias fue de 6 a 26 UPS. Se observó que existe una correlación positiva entre el grado de severidad y la salinidad. El antiparasitario logró disminuir la prevalencia de gregarinas más del 90 %. Mientras que el grado de severidad disminuyó hasta en tres grados. Existe una correlación positiva entre el grado de severidad y la salinidad, no así con la prevalencia. El método de control empleado con PREOXOL® resultó ser altamente eficiente en la producción comercial de camarón.]]></p></abstract>
