Human activities associated with ecotourism and hunting (such as the creation of enclosures), as well as environmental factors can trigger stress. It is necessary to know the hormonal stress and reproductive levels for a better management and conservation of the species. The aim of this study was to quantify and compare fecal levels of cortisol, testosterone and estradiol in white-tailed deer in Management Units for Wildlife Conservation, and to analyze its relationship with environmental variables. Fecal groups were collected for a year in two populations: free-living (Salvador Allende) and fenced (Molinillos) white-tailed deer, in the state of Durango, Mexico. Fecal groups were collected during a year in two populations of white-tailed deer. Fecal DNA was isolated and SRY gene was amplified to know the sex of the individuals. Fecal cortisol, testosterone and estradiol were measured by means of commercial ELISA kits. The vegetation cover was estimated and information on the environmental variables of each site was obtained. A factorial ANOVA and Pearson correlation were carried out. Fecal cortisol levels were highest in the free-living population (F1,103=31.87, p&lt;0.0001). Levels of fecal cortisol increased as testosterone increased in males from both populations. Fecal cortisol, testosterone and estradiol levels increased as winter came (reproductive season) in both populations. Higher fecal cortisol levels in the free-living population suggested the effect of enclosure does not always generate stress, under adequate management conditions.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen El venado cola blanca es una especie sensible y puede estresarse con facilidad. Actividades humanas asociadas al ecoturismo y la cacería (creación de encierros), así como factores ambientales pueden provocar estrés. Es necesario conocer los niveles hormonales de estrés y reproductivos para un mejor manejo y conservación de la especie. El objetivo de este trabajo fue cuantificar y comparar los niveles de cortisol, testosterona y estradiol en heces de venado cola blanca en Unidades de Manejo para la Conservación de la vida Silvestre, y analizar su relación con variables ambientales. Se colectaron grupos fecales durante todo un año en dos poblaciones: vida libre (Salvador Allende) y en encierro (Molinillos) en el Estado de Durango, México. Se aisló DNA fecal y se amplificó el gen SRY para conocer el sexo de los individuos. Se cuantificó cortisol, testosterona y estradiol en heces mediante kits comerciales ELISA. Se estimó la cobertura vegetal y se obtuvo información de las variables ambientales de cada sitio. Se llevó a cabo un ANOVA factorial y correlación de Pearson. Los niveles de cortisol en heces fueron más altos en vida libre (F1,103 = 31.87, p&lt;0.0001). En machos de ambas poblaciones, el cortisol aumentó conforme la testosterona aumentó. Los niveles de cortisol, testosterona y estradiol en heces aumentaron conforme las estaciones avanzaron al invierno (cuando ocurre el celo) en ambas poblaciones. Mayores niveles de cortisol fecal en la población en vida libre, sugieren que bajo buenas condiciones de manejo, el efecto del encierro no siempre es generador de estrés.]]></p></abstract>
