In addition, the transition from flowering to fructification is gradual in this crop, causing calyxes of the first flowerings to be exposed to damages by biotic and abiotic factors. The objective of this work was to evaluate yield and quality of the calyxes of three varieties of roselle (UAN8, UAN6 and China) depending on unique harvest and continuous harvest. The following variables were evaluated: number of calyxes; calyx length; calyx fresh weight; calyx dry weight; pH; titratable acidity; total soluble solids; total coliforms; aerobic mesophilic bacteria; molds and yeasts. The analyzed harvest methods did not generate significant differences in yield variables. Of the three evaluated varieties, UAN8 showed the best calyxes yield. In continuous harvest, the calyxes had more acidic pH values, but a greater total soluble solids content. There was higher contamination of total coliforms and molds in the unique harvest, at the end of the cycle.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen Son escasos los estudios que abordan los factores que inciden en la calidad de los cálices de jamaica (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) durante la cosecha y el manejo poscosecha. Además, en este cultivo la transición de la floración a la fructificación es gradual, lo que origina que los cálices de las primeras floraciones queden expuestos a daños por factores bióticos y abióticos. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el rendimiento y la calidad de los cálices de tres variedades de jamaica (UAN8, UAN6 y China) en función de la cosecha única y la cosecha en cortes continuos. Las variables evaluadas fueron: número de cálices, longitud de cálices, peso fresco de cálices, peso seco de cálices, pH, acidez titulable, sólidos solubles totales, coliformes totales, mesófilos aerobios, mohos y levaduras. Los métodos de cosecha analizados no generaron diferencias significativas en las variables de rendimiento. De las tres variedades evaluadas, la UAN8 obtuvo el mejor rendimiento de cálices. En la cosecha continua, los cálices tuvieron valores de pH más ácidos, pero contenidos mayores de sólidos solubles totales. Hubo mayor contaminación de coliformes totales y mohos en la cosecha única, al final del ciclo.]]></p></abstract>
