This research reports the first monitoring of heavy metals in the Adolfo Ruiz Cortines dam in Alamos, municipality of Sonora, Mexico. Concentrations of Arsenic (As), Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg) and Copper (Cu) were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry coupled to the hydride generation system. A health risk assessment was carried out calculating cumulative doses of As and Pb in tap water, Oreochromis niloticus (known as tilapia) and dam sediments. The results of this research reveal that the most important source of arsenic in humans is Oreochromis niloticus and for lead it is the consumption of tap water. Children are the most affected population, reaching a cumulative risk index for exposure to Pb of HIc = 3.30 and for As of HIc = 7.35. This study estimated that communities close to Adolfo Ruiz Cortines dam, present a potential health risk due to the consumption of O. niloticus, tap water and dam sediments contaminated with Pb and As.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen La contaminación de la cadena alimenticia con metales pesados es una de las preocupaciones más importantes en salud pública e inocuidad alimentaria. Esta investigación reporta el primer monitoreo de metales pesados en la presa Adolfo Ruiz Cortines perteneciente al municipio de Álamos, Sonora, México. Las concentraciones de Arsénico (As), Plomo (Pb), Mercurio (Hg) y Cubre (Cu) se analizaron mediante espectrofotometría de absorción atómica acoplada a generador de hidruros. Se realizó una evaluación de riesgos a la salud calculando las dosis de As y Pb cumulativas en agua de grifo, Oreochromis niloticus y sedimentos costeros. Los resultados de esta investigación revelan que la fuente más importante de arsénico es Oreochromis niloticus y de plomo es el consumo de agua de grifo. La población más afectada son los niños, alcanzando un índice de riesgo cumulativo por exposición a Pb de HIc= 3.302388 y para As de HIc=7.351969. En este estudio se estimó que en las comunidades cercanas a la presa Adolfo Ruiz Cortines existe un riesgo potencial a la salud por consumo de O. niloticus, agua de grifo y sedimentos costeros contaminados con Pb y As.]]></p></abstract>
