The main aim of this research was to describe those practices for pesticide use and their relationship with occupational exposure symptoms among sugarcane farmers in the central region of Veracruz, Mexico. A total of 147 interviews were carried out: 74 to sugarcane farmers, 35 to farmer-applicators, and 38 to applicators. Practices of use, pesticides, and Pesticide Use Quality Index (QPUI1) were identified. The results indicate that farmers choose the pesticide for its effectiveness and their experience; 78 % leave the containers in the field or incinerate them, 94 % do not know the time required for entering the sugarcane field after the application, and 18% lacks of a complete personal protective equipment. The PQUI was statistically significant (Tukey, p&#8804;0.05) for the applicators. It is concluded that occupational exposure to pesticides in the study area is relatively high, level of education has a relevant role in adopting good practices for pesticides use, and that a strong link exists between exposure to pesticides and health problems.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen Hoy día los plaguicidas son usados intensivamente en la agricultura industrial a nivel mundial para el control de plagas, enfermedades y malezas. El objetivo fue calificar las prácticas de uso de plaguicidas y su relación con síntomas de exposición ocupacional entre productores de caña de azúcar en la región central de Veracruz, México. Se realizaron 147 entrevistas entre productores (74), productores-aplicadores (35) y aplicadores (38). Se registraron prácticas de uso, plaguicidas e Índice de Calidad de Uso de Plaguicidas (QPUI). Se encontró que los productores eligen los plaguicidas por efectividad y experiencia, 78 % abandona los envases en el campo o los incinera, 94 % desconoce el tiempo requerido para ingresar al campo después de la aplicación y en el 18 % prevalece un uso incompleto del equipo de protección. El QPUI fue estadísticamente significativo (Tukey, p &#8804; 0.05) para los aplicadores. Se concluye que la exposición laboral a los plaguicidas en la zona de estudio es relativamente alta, que la escolaridad tiene un papel relevante en adoptar buenas prácticas de uso de plaguicidas y que existe una relación estrecha entre exposición a plaguicidas y problemas de salud.]]></p></abstract>
