Es relevante analizar desde una posición crítica (que no es necesariamente negativa) las tendencias que dominan el panorama actual de la educación superior. Como en todos los fenómenos sociales, estas tendencias están basadas en demandas reales, pero a las que se han ido añadiendo elementos de dudosa validez que desvirtúan en muchos casos los objetivos iniciales que explican el origen de la tendencia. En este artículo se analizan algunos mitos, algunas tendencias, que en algún caso son posiblemente meras modas, y ciertos aspectos que realmente forman parte de la esencia de la universidad: servir a la sociedad formando personas preparadas para vivir y trabajar en un mundo globalizado.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[Resumo: As universidades, como o resto das instituições humanas, não têm sido nem são alheias a combinar a necessidade real de cumprir uma missão socialmente desejável com um conjunto de mitos, modas e tendências que nem sempre suportam uma análise crítica, essa que os universitários aplicamos a outros campos do saber, mas que tendemos a esquecer quando analisamos nosso entorno más próximo. É relevante analisar partindo de uma posição crítica (que não é necessariamente negativa) as tendências que dominam o panorama atual da educação superior. Como em todos os fenômenos sociais, estas tendências estão baseadas em demandas reais, mas que se têm ido acrescentando elementos de duvidosa validez que desvirtuam em muitos casos os objetivos iniciais que explicam a origem da tendência. Em este artigo se analisam alguns mitos, algumas tendências, que em algum caso são possivelmente meras modas, e certos aspectos que realmente formam parte da essência da universidade: servir a sociedade formando pessoas preparadas para viver e trabalhar em um mundo globalizado.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: Universities, like all the other human institutions, could not remain aloof from the real necessity to combine a socially desirable mission with a whole of myths, fashion and trends that not always can withstand a critical analysis, the kind of analysis that university researchers and teachers do apply to other fields of knowledge but tend to forget when we carry out an analysis of our closest environment. It is important to analyze from a critical perspective (that is not necessarily negative) the trends that dominate the current scene of higher education. Like in all social phenomena, these trends are based on real demands, but those demands have been accompanied with elements whose validity is highly questionable and that distort in many cases the original objectives that explain what gave rise to the referred trends. This article offers an analysis of some of the myths and trends that in some cases are just passing fashion, and of other aspects which really belong to the essence of university: to serve society training persons and preparing them to live and work in a globalized world.]]></p></abstract>
