Both multiple and single source networks are considered. In the first case the partition refers to the definition of isolated sectors, each of them supplied by its own sources. The shortest paths from each water source to each network node are found and each network node is assigned to be supplied exclusively by the source with the shortest path distance to it. The pipes to be closed are the edge separators of such partition. In the second case the partitioning problem refers to a division of the network in relatively small district metering areas (DMAs) each of them fed by a single pipe. A hierarchical tree for the graph is constructed using a breadth-first search. A recursive approach is applied on this tree to find the design flow rates in each pipe summing the demand of descendant nodes. Based on these flow rates the nodes belonging to each DMA are found. The pipes to be closed are defined as the chords between branches of the hierarchical tree lying below the feeding pipe. The procedure has been tested on a real medium city all-pipe water distribution network model.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen Se propone una metodología para el diseño de la sectorización de redes de agua potable, considerando redes con una sola fuente y con múltiples fuentes. En el primer caso, la sectorización se refiere a la definición de sectores aislados, cada uno de los cuales se abastece de su propia fuente o fuentes. Se encuentran los caminos más cortos de cada fuente a cada nodo de la red, y cada nodo se asigna a ser abastecido exclusivamente de la fuente con el camino de distancia más corta al mismo nodo. Las tuberías por cerrar serán los separadores de tal partición. En el segundo caso, el problema de sectorización se refiere a una división de la red en distritos hidrométricos relativamente pequeños, cada uno de los cuales se abastece de una sola tubería. Se construye un árbol jerárquico del grafo con el uso de búsqueda en amplitud. Se aplica luego un procedimiento recursivo sobre este árbol para obtener los gastos de diseño en cada tubería, sumando la demanda de los nodos descendentes. Con base en estos gastos, se obtienen los nodos pertenecientes a cada distrito hidrométrico. Las tuberías a cerrar se definen por las cuerdas entre los ramales del árbol jerárquico que se encuentran debajo de la tubería alimentadora. El procedimiento ha sido probado sobre un modelo que incluye todas las tuberías de la red de distribución de agua potable de una ciudad real de tamaño medio.]]></p></abstract>
