The prediction of the basin&#8217;s response to heavy rainfall is needed in order to assess the impacts of potential watershed management decisions, especially during high flow periods. In this study, the HEC-HMS model was adopted to predict the accumulated discharges in a small urban basin located in West Palm Beach, Florida, USA. The model was calibrated based on seven flood events and validated using seven independent events spanning a 5-year period. The results show that the accumulated flow of water released from the basin was simulated with high accuracy, and that the model can be used for various management scenarios involving high flow conditions in the south Florida urban basin.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen Un área importante de investigación en modelación hidrológica es la predicción de la respuesta a las inundaciones en cuencas urbanas complejas, con estructuras hidráulicas tales como estaciones de bombeo, canales, alcantarillas y desagües. Es necesaria la predicción de la respuesta a las fuertes lluvias en la cuenca para evaluar los impactos potenciales en las decisiones de gestión de cuencas hidrográficas, en especial durante los periodos de altos caudales. En este estudio se adoptó el modelo HEC-HMS para predecir las descargas acumuladas en una cuenca urbana ubicada en West Palm Beach, Florida, USA. El modelo fue calibrado basado en siete eventos de inundación y validado utilizando siete eventos independientes que abarcan un periodo de cinco años. Los resultados muestran que los caudales acumulados de agua expulsada de la cuenca fueron simulados con gran precisión y que el modelo puede ser utilizado para evaluar diferentes escenarios de gestión de condiciones de altos caudales de la cuenca urbana en el sur de Florida.]]></p></abstract>
