Entre las varias organizaciones encargadas de la administración del riego en el país, los distritos de riego tienen uno de los roles más importante, de ahí la pertinencia de estudiar su desempeño. Siguiendo el marco conceptual de Malano y Burton (2001), se diseñó un procedimiento para clasificar los distritos de riego y estimar su desempeño usando indicadores. El procedimiento consistió de las siguientes etapas generales: (1) clasificación de los distritos de riego en grupos climáticos; (2) selección y validación de indicadores de desempeño; (3) determinación de conglomerados de distritos de riego, por grupo climático, aplicando componentes principales y análisis de conglomerados; (4) evaluación del desempeño de cada conglomerado por medio de gráficas multivariadas y una escala de desempeño arbitraria. Se obtuvieron tres grupos climáticos: un grupo seco (con 42 distritos en cinco conglomerados); un grupo templado húmedo (con 14 distritos en dos conglomerados), y un grupo cálido húmedo (con 28 distritos en seis conglomerados). Los conglomerados mostraron características similares, como tipo de cultivos, fuentes de suministro de agua y canales de infraestructura de irrigación, entre otros. En general, el desempeño de riego de todos los conglomerados fue bajo.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: One of the main issues of irrigation in Mexico is its management. Among the various institutions responsible of irrigation management in the country, the irrigation districts have one of the most important roles, hence the pertinence of studying their performance. Following the conceptual framework by Malano and Burton (2001), a procedure was designed to classify the irrigation districts and estimate their performance. The procedure consisted of the following steps: (1) classification of the irrigation districts by climatic groups; (2) selection and validation of irrigation performance indicators; (3) determination of clusters of irrigation districts, by climatic group, using principal components and cluster; (4) performance evaluation of each cluster using multivariate graphs and an arbitrary performance scale. Three climatic groups were obtained: a dry group (42 districts within five clusters), a humid temperate group (14 districts within two clusters) and a humid warm group (28 districts within six clusters). The clusters showed similar characteristics such as type of crops, the source of water supply, and infrastructure of irrigation channels, among others. In general, the irrigation performance of all clusters was low.]]></p></abstract>
