La fracción sérica de muestras sanguíneas se obtuvo de 97 mulares dedicados al trabajo agropecuario (carga, vaquería y silla) y fueron analizadas a través de ELISA comercial tipo sándwich específico para cortisol. La concentración sérica de cortisol fue de 96.3 ng/ml, sin diferencias significativas por sexo, grupo etario y actividad, indicando estabilidad en el resultado y podría ser utilizado como valor de referencia. Esta concentración es menor a la reportada por estudios previos en equinos de exhibición y recreación, de la misma región (133.0 ng/ml). Por tanto, se concluye que se deben usar parámetros propios de la especie, sugiriendo confirmar las diferencias en las capacidades de adaptación y resistencia a los factores de estrés entre estas especies.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract This study evaluated the serum cortisol level and its relationship with the work type, age and sex of mules in tropical conditions. Each blood serum obtained from 97 mules was analyzed by a commercial ELISA kit specific to cortisol. The mean cortisol level was 96.3 ng/mL with no significant differences regarding the variables evaluated making it suitable for used as reference value. Also, this is lower than reported in previous studies in show and recreation horses from the same region (133.0 ng/mL). In summary, it is important to utilize species-specific values and conduct studies to determine the mules' ability to adapt and resist.]]></p></abstract>
