No obstante, México importa de 15.5 a 17 millones de toneladas de grano de maíz amarillo cada año, estos volúmenes se destinan principalmente a la industria para alimentos balanceados con fines pecuarios, así como otros destinos. En la Mesa Central de México (2 200 a 2 600 msnm), en 1.5 millones de hectáreas sembradas de maíz, en más de 50%, de esa superficie, la humedad para el cultivo proviene de la precipitación pluvial, que llega retrasada, insuficiente e irregular, esto obliga a sembrar con retraso y a que se afecte el cultivo por heladas tempranas, ya que las variedades de ciclo largo no completan su madurez y su rendimiento es escaso (1.2 t ha-1). En 2021 se registraron Kuautli Puma, Mistli UNAM y Coztli Puma, variedades de maíz que podrían apoyar la producción de grano, pues poseen precocidad y alta productividad, en condiciones de temporal de lluvias retrasadas, ambientes limitativos, siembras tardías y periodo libre de heladas corto. En esta descripción de variedad se describen las características fenotípicas y ventajas agronómicas, de la variedad de polinización libre de grano amarillo Coztli Puma. Esta variedad rinde en promedio 7.9 t ha-1 y es una alternativa para los productores de maíz de Valles Altos. Coztli Puma, fue registrada en el Catálogo Nacional de Variedades Vegetales (CNVV) y posee el título de obtentor: 2849, otorgado el 21 de diciembre de 2021.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract In Mexico, corn (Zea mays L.) is the most important crop due to its sown area (7.4 million ha), its consumption of more than 200 kg person-1 year-1 and its role in the economy. However, Mexico imports 15.5 to 17 million t of yellow corn grain each year, these volumes are mainly destined for the livestock feed industry, as well as other destinations. In the Central Mexican Plateau (2 200 to 2 600 masl), in 1.5 million hectares sown with corn, in more than 50% of that area, the moisture for the crop comes from rainfall, which arrives late, insufficient and irregular, this forces late sowing and the crop to be affected by early frosts, since long-cycle varieties do not reach maturity and yields are low (1.2 t ha-1). In 2021, Kuautli Puma, Mistli UNAM, and Coztli Puma were registered, corn varieties that could support grain production as they present earliness and high productivity in conditions of delayed rainfall, limiting environments, late sowing, and short frost-free period. This variety description describes the phenotypic characteristics and agronomic advantages of the yellow-grain free-pollinated variety named Coztli Puma. This variety yields an average of 7.9 t ha-1 and is an alternative for corn producers in Valles Altos.
