Lo forrajes alternativos fueron canola y cártamo y los tradicionales fueron cebada y triticale. Las cuatro fechas de siembra fueron: 16 de noviembre, 7 de diciembre, 28 de diciembre y 18 de enero, durante dos años. Al comparar con cebada y triticale, la canola y el cártamo tuvieron menor fibra detergente neutro (FDN) y mayor proteína cruda (PC), pero similar energía neta para lactancia (ENL). La fecha de siembra tuvo poco impacto en la composición nutritiva de estos forrajes, pero el rendimiento de nutrientes fue afectado significativamente. Los rendimientos de materia seca (MS), PC y ENL decrecieron al retrasar la fecha de siembra en todas las especies. Canola, cártamo y cebada presentaron los mayores rendimientos de nutrientes el 16 de noviembre y 7 de diciembre, mientras que en triticale se presentaron entre el 16 de noviembre y 28 de diciembre. Cebada y triticale produjeron los rendimientos más altos de MS y ENL en todas las fechas de siembra, ambas especies mostraron el mayor rendimiento de FDN en las tres primeras fechas de siembra durante los dos años. En conclusión, la siembra temprana mejora la composición nutritiva y la productividad en canola y cártamo, por ello, estos cultivos representan una buena opción como forraje alternativo sembrado a finales de noviembre o principios de diciembre en el norte de México.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the nutrient composition and productivity of alternative forages on different sowing dates. The alternative forages were canola and safflower, and the traditional ones were barley and triticale. The four sowing dates were: November 16, December 7, December 28 and January 18, for two years. When compared with barley and triticale, canola and safflower had lower neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and higher crude protein (CP), but similar net energy for lactation (NEL). The sowing date had little impact on the nutrient composition of these forages, but the nutrient yield was significantly affected. Dry matter (DM), CP and NEL yields decreased by delaying the sowing date in all species. Canola, safflower and barley had the highest nutrient yields on November 16 and December 7, while in triticale, they occurred between November 16 and December 28. Barley and triticale produced the highest yields of DM and NEL on all sowing dates; both species showed the highest NDF yield on the first three sowing dates during the two years. In conclusion, early sowing improves the nutrient composition and productivity in canola and safflower, therefore, these crops represent a good option as an alternative forage sown in late November or early December in northern Mexico.]]></p></abstract>
