Sin embargo, poco se conoce sobre la relación entre pesos y tallas de sus semillas y su propagación en estos medios. Por lo que una investigación sobre estos factores permitirá determinar sus capacidades de establecimiento reales. Los objetivos de este estudio fueron determinar las relaciones entre pesos y dimensiones de semillas de Ricinus y Moringa contra germinación y crecimiento de sus plántulas. Se seleccionaron aleatoriamente 80 semillas por especie. Las semillas fueron pesadas y medidas y se germinaron en un sustrato arenoso. Durante dos meses se evaluó el número de días para germinar, la altura y diámetro del tallo, el área foliar, el índice de robustez y la biomasa final, mediante análisis de correlación y regresión con las tallas y pesos de las semillas. Los resultados para ambas especies mostraron menores tiempos de germinación en semillas más ligeras (r= -0.27 para Ricinus y -0.08 para Moringa), pero también mostraron una correlación positiva entre pesos y variables de crecimiento, siendo mayores en tallos (r= 0.41 para Ricinus y 0.68 para Moringa) y para la biomasa de los tallos (r= 0.35 para Ricinus y 0.53 para Moringa) y las raíces. El largo de la semilla obtuvo la mayor correlación en elongación de tallos para Ricinus (r= 0.24), mientras que en Moringa fue el ancho (r= 0.61). Se concluye que semillas más pesadas y grandes producirán plántulas más altas y con raíces más profusas en un sustrato arenoso.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Ricinus communis L. and Moringa oleifera Lam. are oleaginous with industrial applications that are promoted to be cultivated in poor soils. However, little is known about the relationship between weights and sizes of their seeds and their propagation in these media. Therefore, an investigation on these factors will allow to determine their real establishment capacities. The objectives of this study were to determine the relationship between weight and size of seeds of Ricinus and Moringa against germination and seedling growth. 80 seeds per species were randomly selected. The seeds were weighed, measured and germinated in a sandy substrate. During two months, the number of days to germinate, stem height and diameter, leaf area, robustness index and final biomass were evaluated by correlation and regression analysis with seed sizes and weights. The results for both species showed shorter germination times in lighter seeds (r= -0.27 for Ricinus and -0.08 for Moringa), but also showed a positive correlation between weights and growth variables, being higher in stems (r= 0.41 for Ricinus and 0.68 for Moringa) and for the biomass of the stems (r= 0.35 for Ricinus and 0.53 for Moringa) and the roots. The length of the seed obtained the highest correlation in stem elongation for Ricinus (r= 0.24), while Moringa it was the width (r= 0.61). We concluded that heavier and larger seeds will produce taller seedlings with more profuse roots in a sandy substrate.]]></p></abstract>
