El estudio de la profesionalización de estas empresas resulta relevante, toda vez que permite alcanzar una gestión eficiente dentro de la organización y para aumentar ganancias. Esta investigación tiene como objetivo describir y analizar la evolución cuantitativa de la producción científica de la profesionalización en la EF familiar desde 1980 a 2019, lo cual, permite identificar aspectos claves como son el autor más citado, la revista de mayor impacto, la institución líder, a fin de analizar las principales características del tema y perfilar futuras líneas de investigación.  Método:  Los datos se obtuvieron de los artículos recuperados del portal Web of Science, de Clarivate Analytics y se llevó a cabo un método bibliométrico y análisis de contenido.  Resultados:  La búsqueda produjo 112 artículos, con picos de producción en 2013 y 2018. Se analizan las redes de coocurrencia, citación y coautoría. La revista Family Business Review es la de mayor publicación de artículos; no obstante, el Journal of Finance y Quarterly Journal of Economics tienen un factor de impacto mayor. Anderson y Reeb son los autores más citados. Estados Unidos concentran la mayor producción científica y la participación de América Latina y, en específico México, es casi nula.  Discusión y Conclusión:  El tema de profesionalización comenzó a ser estudiado como un factor implícito y de soporte para el crecimiento de la empresa familiar. En los últimos nueve años, aumentaron las publicaciones sobre la profesionalización ya que incide en la obtención de ganancias económicas, además, está en la base de la sucesión e institucionalización de la organización e interviene en la continuidad de la empresa y la armonía familiar. La mayoría de las investigaciones se enfocan en evaluar los resultados financieros comparando entre un CEO familiar o uno externo. Sin embargo, falta profundizar en el estudio de cómo realizar la planeación, ejecución y evaluación de la profesionalización. Las diferencias en la gestión aplicable a empresas familiares grandes, las microempresas, pequeños emprendimientos, y sus componentes culturales, son temas amplios que requieren más investigación. A nivel internacional sigue en debate el perfil de la persona para manejar eficientemente la EF, lo cual abre la oportunidad para investigar estos temas en el contexto mexicano.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Introduction:  Family businesses (FB) contribute significantly to the economy and society in many countries. The study of FB professionalization is relevant since it allows them to achieve efficient management within the organization and obtain higher profits. This research aims to describe and analyse the quantitative evolution of the scientific production of professionalization in the FB from 1980 to 2019, which allows documenting key bibliometric parameters to analyse the subject's main characteristics and profile future research lines.  Method:  The articles retrieved from the Web of Science portal, from Clarivate Analytics, provided the primary data to conduct a bibliometric method and content analysis.  Results:  The search produced 112 articles, with production peaks in 2013 and 2018. Networks of co-occurrence, citation, and co-authorship are analysed. Family Business Review has the largest publication of articles; however, the Journal of Finance and Quarterly Journal of Economics have a higher impact factor. Anderson and Reeb are the most cited authors. The United States leads in scientific production, Latin American participation, and specifically, Mexico is almost nil.  Discussion and Conclusion:  The study of professionalization began as an implicit and supporting factor for the family business's growth. Publications on the subject increased in the last nine years; it has an impact on the profit-making, it is also at the basis of the succession and institutionalization of the organization and plays a role in the continuity of the company and family harmony. Most research focuses on comparing the financial results between a family CEO or an external CEO. However, there is a need to study how to carry out the planning, execution, and evaluation of professionalization. Differences in management for large family businesses, micro-enterprises, little ventures, and their cultural components are broad topics requiring more research. At the international level, the person's profile to efficiently manage the EF is still under discussion, opening the opportunity to investigate these issues in the Mexican context.]]></p></abstract>
