</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
Abstract The purpose of this paper is to formulate a concept of corruption from a philosophical perspective that allows us to examine the kind of link between the State and its citizens behind the anomalous handling of government. Thus, based on Republican thinking, we argue that corruption is a practice of State domination based on the arbitrary interference of public officials in the design and execution of laws and policies, which undermines the legitimacy of political power and, consequently, the reasons for individuals to adhere to formal norms. This approach considers the evaluative and practical aspects of the term, and also the way in which corruption restricts people’s freedom to define and accomplish their interests.
</abstract>
