<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">I present photographic record and feeding behavior of a Neotropic cormorant (<i>Phalacrocorax brasilianus</i>) when eating an armored suckermouth catfish (<i>Pterygoplichthys</i> sp.) in Villahermosa, Tabasco, Mexico. The observation represents the first record of predation for armored suckermouth catfish by a resident bird, suggesting an abundant presence of the fish in the region.</font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Keywords</b>: diet, feeding behavior, invasive species, southeastern Mexico.</font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Los peces diablo (Loricariidae) son especies invasoras de peces dulceacu&iacute;colas nativas del sur de Centro y Sudam&eacute;rica (Nelson 2006, Helfman <i>et al.</i> 2009), son populares como especies de acuario y han sido introducidas en diferentes ecosistemas fuera de su &aacute;rea de distribuci&oacute;n nativa (Wu <i>et al.</i> 2011). En M&eacute;xico, especialmente, se han expandido con rapidez (Mendoza <i>et al.</i> 2007) y hasta el momento s&oacute;lo dos especies del g&eacute;nero <i>Pterygoplichthys</i> (<i>P. pardalis</i> y <i>P. disjunctivus</i>) son las que se han reportado para el sureste de M&eacute;xico (Amador&#45;del&#45;&Aacute;ngel y Wakida&#45;Kusunoki 2014).</font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Los peces diablo poseen una armadura &oacute;sea y fuertes espinas dorsales (Helfman <i>et al.</i> 2009) y en edad adulta, especies como <i>P. disjunctivus</i>, alcanzan una longitud de 25&#45;40 cm; los ejemplares juveniles son de talla menor (Nico 2010). Se ha observado que algunas especies de peces diablo evitan aguas someras, ya que son presas potenciales, principalmente, de aves pisc&iacute;voras (Power 1984); adem&aacute;s de que existen registros de otros depredadores, en su &aacute;rea nativa, tales como nutrias, caimanes, serpientes, tortugas y peces de mayor talla (Willard 1985, Bistoni <i>et al.</i> 1995, Aguiar y Di&#45;Bernardo 2004, Kasper <i>et al.</i> 2008, Bonino <i>et al.</i> 2009, Borteiro <i>et al.</i> 2009, Cabral <i>et al.</i> 2010). A pesar de esto, el &uacute;nico registro de depredaci&oacute;n para las especies de <i>Pterygoplichthys</i> en su &aacute;rea nativa es por el caim&aacute;n (<i>Melanosuchus niger</i>) (Willard 1985), y en Florida, donde es introducida, por aves pisc&iacute;voras como el cormor&aacute;n orej&oacute;n (<i>Phalacrocorax auritus</i>), la garza morena (<i>Ardea herodias</i>), la anhinga americana (<i>Anhinga anhinga</i>) y mam&iacute;feros como la nutria neotropical (<i>Lontra longicaudis</i>) (Nico 2010).</font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En M&eacute;xico, la informaci&oacute;n de depredadores de peces diablo es inexistente, por lo que basado en una observaci&oacute;n presento una secuencia fotogr&aacute;fica (<a href="/img/revistas/huitzil/v16n2/a3f1.jpg" target="_blank">Fig. 1</a>) de un individuo de cormor&aacute;n oliv&aacute;ceo (<i>Phalacrocorax brasilianus</i>) aliment&aacute;ndose de un individuo juvenil de pez diablo ocurrida el 31 de diciembre de 2011 en la ribera del r&iacute;o Grijalva, en la ciudad de Villahermosa, Tabasco, M&eacute;xico (19&#176;59'21.86"N, 92&#176;54'56.71"O). La conducta del cormor&aacute;n oliv&aacute;ceo, en un tiempo aproximado de 3 min, consisti&oacute; en sacar al pez despu&eacute;s de haberse sumergido, mantenerlo en el pico, sacudirlo, golpearlo contra el agua y lanzarlo al aire hasta que logr&oacute; acomodarlo de tal manera que pudiera tragarlo completo sin que las espinas dorsales lo impidieran. Al parecer el cormor&aacute;n no sufri&oacute; ning&uacute;n da&ntilde;o despu&eacute;s de haber engullido el pez, pues continu&eacute; observ&aacute;ndolo por un periodo de 10 min, tiempo que permaneci&oacute; en la zona, y emprendi&oacute; el vuelo sin problema alguno.</font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Debido a que las caracter&iacute;sticas diagn&oacute;sticas para la identificaci&oacute;n de las especies de pez diablo se relacionan con los patrones de pigmentaci&oacute;n y caracter&iacute;sticas de las escamas, no fue posible determinar la especie a trav&eacute;s del registro fotogr&aacute;fico. Hasta el momento s&oacute;lo las dos especies de pez diablo <i>P. pardalis</i> y <i>P. disjunctivus</i> se han reportado para Tabasco (Wakida&#45;Kusunoki <i>et al.</i> 2007, Wakida&#45;Kusunoki y Amador&#45;del&#45;&Aacute;ngel 2008, Amador&#45;del&#45;&Aacute;ngel y Wakida&#45;Kusunoki 2014). Sin embargo, la &uacute;nica reportada en Villahermosa ha sido <i>P. pardalis</i> (Wakida&#45;Kusunoki <i>et al.</i> 2007), y aunque se ha mencionado la posible dispersi&oacute;n de <i>P. disjunctivus</i> en las cuencas de los r&iacute;os Grijalva y Usumacinta, los registros est&aacute;n reportados s&oacute;lo en los l&iacute;mites entre Tabasco y Campeche (Wakida&#45;Kusunoki y Amador&#45;del&#45;&Aacute;ngel 2008).</font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En general, los cormoranes oliv&aacute;ceos no tienen preferencia por alguna especie de pez, sino que consumen aquellas que son m&aacute;s abundantes (Bent 1922, Orta 1992, Telfair y Morrison 1995), adem&aacute;s de que la conducta del cormor&aacute;n oliv&aacute;ceo es muy parecida a la descrita para el cormor&aacute;n orejudo en Florida (Nico 2010). A pesar de que se ha reportado que los individuos juveniles de <i>Pterygoplichthys</i> tienen actividad nocturna y se esconden durante el d&iacute;a (Nico 2010), la capacidad de buceo del cormor&aacute;n oliv&aacute;ceo le permitir&iacute;a encontrar a los peces que son su principal fuente de alimento (Orta 1992, Telfair y Morrison 1995).</font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Hay reportes de que peces diablo como <i>Hypostomus plecostomus</i> son capaces de causar serias heridas en el saco gular de los pel&iacute;canos (Karunarantha <i>et al.</i> 2008); sin embargo, la informaci&oacute;n sobre la depredaci&oacute;n por cormoranes y garzas se&ntilde;ala que la conducta habitual es tragarlos completos sin que haya reportes, en apariencia, de da&ntilde;o a nivel g&aacute;strico. Hay que se&ntilde;alar que la depredaci&oacute;n de peces diablo en Florida por especies nativas ocurri&oacute; despu&eacute;s de haber transcurrido algunos a&ntilde;os, ya que en un principio los ignoraban o los dejaban ir aparentemente sin saber c&oacute;mo consumirlos (Nico 2010). Por esta raz&oacute;n, documentar la depredaci&oacute;n por parte de una especie residente en la zona, como el cormor&aacute;n oliv&aacute;ceo, si bien puede tratarse de un caso aislado, podr&iacute;a tambi&eacute;n sugerir que est&aacute; acostumbrado a la presencia de los peces diablo y por el h&aacute;bito oportunista que presenta el cormor&aacute;n supondr&iacute;a una abundancia de presas elevada, aunque no existe informaci&oacute;n detallada al respecto.</font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>  	    ]]></body>
