Objetivo:  Analizar las indicaciones de profilaxis antibiótica en cirugías pediátricas en un hospital pediátrico en los últimos seis años.  Pacientes:  Menores de 18 años.  Material y métodos:  Se revisaron las indicaciones profilácticas con antibiótico para procedimientos quirúrgicos pediátricos, cuando era recomendada y cuando no lo ameritaba. Los resultados se presentan en proporciones con sus intervalos de confianza al 95% (IC95%).  Resultados:  605 procedimientos fueron analizados, en 41% estaba indicada una profilaxis antimicrobiana. Cuando era recomendada, se indicó en 54.9% (IC95% de 50.1 a 59.7%) de los casos. No se indicó en 72.6% (IC95% de 65.3 a 78.6%) de los procedimientos sin recomendación profiláctica. El cumplimiento correcto fue de 60.6% (IC95% de 56.1 a 64%). El Servicio de Ortopedia mostró el mejor cumplimiento (91 y 87.8%). La colocación de catéteres tuvo el menor cumplimiento (60%) y la hidrocelectomía fue la mayor en administración injustificada (50%).  Conclusiones:  El cumplimiento adecuado de la profilaxis antibiótica quirúrgica aún es deficiente en esta muestra. Se requiere capacitación y vigilancia continua para aumentar una conducta correcta y reducir el riesgo de infecciones en sitios quirúrgicos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: Surgical antibiotic prophylaxis has reduced the frequency of infections in surgical sites in children and adults.  Objective:  Analyze the indications of a antibiotic prophylaxis in pediatric surgeries in a pediatric hospital in the last six years.  Patients:  Under 18 years.  Material and methods:  Prophylactic indications of antibiotic for pediatric surgical procedures in our hospital services were reviewed and analyzed, recommendation and non-indication. The results are presented in proportions with their 95% confidence intervals (95% CI).  Results:  605 procedures were analyzed; in 41% an antimicrobial prophylaxis was indicated. Upon recommendation, it was indicated in 54.9% (95% CI from 50.1 to 59.7%); likewise, in 72.6% (95% CI from 65.3 to 78.6%) of the procedures without prophylactic recommendation, this was not indicated. The correct compliance with the recommendation was 60.6% (95% CI from 56.1 to 64%). The orthopedic service showed the best compliance (91 and 87.8%). Of the procedures, catheter placement was the least complied with in the administration of antibiotics prophylactic (60%) and hydrocelectomy was the highest in unjustified administration (50%).  Conclusions:  Adequate compliance of surgical antibiotic prophylaxis is still deficient in this sample. Training and continuous monitoring are required to reduce the risk of surgical site infections.]]></p></abstract>
