Las transferencias federales son la principal fuente de recursos con que cuentan las entidades federativas y los municipios, constituyen 85% de sus ingresos. Este artículo examina si mayores asignaciones federales implican una reducción en la desigualdad salarial dentro de las entidades federativas durante el periodo de 2002 a 2012. Debido a que esta relación es endógena, se utilizan técnicas de panel de datos dinámicos. Los resultados muestran que los fondos federales etiquetados para el fortalecimiento de las haciendas públicas locales contribuyen en la reducción de la desigualdad salarial; particularmente, los fondos federales dirigidos a los municipios inciden más en la desigualdad en comparación con los dirigidos a los estados. Es decir, una mayor descentralización incide en la reducción de la desigualdad.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: Mexico is a highly centralized country; federal government assigns resources to the states and the municipalities&#8217; governments. The federal transfers represent 85% of the total local government´s income. This paper analyzes whether higher federal transfers imply a lower wage inequality within state governments for the period from 2002 to 2012. It uses dynamic panel data methods to estimate this relationship because of the existing endogeneity. Federal funds labeled for fiscal sustainability of the local government finances reduce wage inequality; particularly, federal funds targeted to municipalities reduce much more the inequality relative to those targeted to states. Thus, decentralization reduces wage inequality.]]></p></abstract>
