En particular se sabe que en el dominio de sistemas lineales, la degeneración de los sistemas está estrechamente relacionada con la simetría; la degeneración de un estado estacionario corresponde a la dimensión de una de las representaciones irreducibles del grupo de simetría. La importancia de identificar el grupo de simetría es por lo tanto fundamental para el etiquetado de los estados propios del sistema. En ocasiones el espectro presenta degeneración accidental sistemática, hecho que indica que el grupo de simetría supuesto es en realidad un subgrupo. Esta situación se presenta, por ejemplo, en el átomo de hidrógeno no relativista, pero también en el caso de una partícula atrapada en una caja cúbica con paredes infinitas. En esta contribución se presenta un procedimiento que permite identificar el grupo de simetría que explica la degeneración del sistema de una partícula en una caja. Siguiendo dicho procedimiento se presentan ejemplos para ilustrar los conceptos involucrados, así como las consecuencias de identificar erróneamente el grupo de simetría para el cálculo de las reglas de selección.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[In physics as well as in chemistry the importance of symmetry is widely acknowledged. It is of common knowledge that the systems' degeneracy, in the domain of linear physical systems, is tightly related with symmetry. The stationary state degeneracy should correspond with the dimension of the symmetry group irreducible representations (irreps) associated. Therefore identifying the symmetry group is essential for labeling the energy levels. Sometimes the spectrum presents systematic accidental degeneracy, which means that the supposed symmetry group is actually a subgroup. This is the case for a particle in a cubic box, with impenetrable walls. This article presents the procedure that allows the identification of the new symmetry group that explains the degeneracy. Furthermore examples to illustrate the concepts are presented as well as the consequences implied in the selection rules.]]></p></abstract>

En particular se sabe que en el dominio de sistemas lineales, la degeneraci&oacute;n de los sistemas est&aacute; estrechamente relacionada con la simetr&iacute;a; la degeneraci&oacute;n de un estado estacionario corresponde a la dimensi&oacute;n de una de las representaciones irreducibles del grupo de simetr&iacute;a. La importancia de identificar el grupo de simetr&iacute;a es por lo tanto fundamental para el etiquetado de los estados propios del sistema. En ocasiones el espectro presenta degeneraci&oacute;n accidental sistem&aacute;tica, hecho que indica que el grupo de simetr&iacute;a supuesto es en realidad un subgrupo.
