La propuesta corpuscular para la naturaleza de la luz de Newton, defendida por Voltaire, se enfrentó a la bien aceptada física de Descartes y de sus seguidores, quienes proponían que la luz se comporta como un fluido compuesto por minúsculos torbellinos. Es en este contexto en el cual se encuentra el debate sobre la naturaleza de la luz presentado en el libro de Voltaire y aquí discutido. Es importante señalar que este debate sería histórica y científicamente opacado por la discusión sobre la naturaleza ondulatoria o corpuscular de la luz de Huygens y Newton. Mientras que esta última discusión fue un tanto más objetiva pues estuvo basada en evidencia sólida, la primera fue una discusión con un alto contenido especulativo en donde frecuentemente argumentos físicos, metafísicos y teológicos eran igualmente considerados. Como en seguida se muestra, a pesar de que Newton propuso una teoría de la luz "incorrecta" contó para su defensa con el extraordinario enciclopedismo y sagacidad de Voltaire.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[The problem of the nature of light as presented in the book Elements de la Philosophie de Newton by Voltaire is presented and its controversy with Cartesian physics. Newton corpuscular proposal for the nature of light, defended by Voltaire, had to face the well accepted physics of Descartes and its followers who proposed that light behaves as a fluid made up of small vortex. It is in this context where the debate of light nature is presented in Voltaire book and here discussed. It is worth noting that this debate would historically and scientifically shadowed by the discussion on the ondulatory and corpuscular theories of light of Huygens and Newton. While the last discussion was rather objective since it was based in solid evidence, the first one had a high degree of speculation where physical, metaphysical and theological arguments would be equally considered. As it is shown, even though Newton proposed an "incorrect" theory of light, he had for his defence the extraordinary encyclopaedism and wit of Voltaire.]]></p></abstract>

La propuesta corpuscular para la naturaleza de la luz de Newton, defendida por Voltaire, se enfrent&oacute; a la bien aceptada f&iacute;sica de Descartes y de sus seguidores, quienes propon&iacute;an que la luz se comporta como un fluido compuesto por min&uacute;sculos torbellinos. Es en este contexto en el cual se encuentra el debate sobre la naturaleza de la luz presentado en el libro de Voltaire y aqu&iacute; discutido.
