Los objetivos del estudio fueron: 1) evaluar el efecto de la actividad humana en el consumo de alimento del tepezcuintle en la selva Lacandona de Chiapas, México, 2) documentar los hábitos alimentarios de este roedor y 3) analizar posibles diferencias en las estrategias de búsqueda y consumo de alimento entre los individuos de tepezcuintle en el área de estudio. De enero a junio 2016, se caracterizaron y monitorearon sitios de alimentación (comederos) del tepezcuintle bajo árboles de Pouteria sapota, Brosimum alicastrum y Attalea butyracea en un ambiente perturbado y uno conservado. Se determinó la frecuencia de visita, horario de consumo y conducta alimentaria de los tepezcuintles y se evaluó el efecto de las características de los comederos y de los individuos en el consumo de alimento. Se obtuvieron 1,743 registros de visitas de tepezcuintles y se describieron las conductas: neutral, evasiva, agonística y sexual. Se demostró que la actividad humana y el tipo de alimento tienen un efecto en el consumo del mismo, por lo que este roedor presenta estrategias complejas de búsqueda y consumo de alimento que le permiten aprovechar los recursos, la coexistencia con competidores y la evasión de depredadores.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Habitat transformation may influence the feeding habits of mammals such as the lowland paca, Cuniculus paca. The objectives of this study were: 1) to evaluate the effect of human activity on paca foraging habits, 2) to document the foraging habits of this rodent, and 3) to analyze potential differences in the foraging behavior among paca individuals in the study area. From January to June 2016, feeding sites (feeders) of pacas under Pouteria sapota, Brosimum alicastrum, and Attalea butyracea trees were characterized and monitored in disturbed and conserved sites. The frequency of visits, foraging schedule and feeding behavior of pacas were recorded, and the effect of individual pacas and feeder characteristics on food consumption were evaluated. We obtained 1,743 records of paca visits and described its neutral, evasive, agonistic and sexual behaviors. We found that human activity and food types affect food consumption. Therefore, this rodent shows diverse foraging behaviors allowing it to take advantage of available resources, coexist with competitors, and avoid predation.]]></p></abstract>
