We also examined the role of the environmental gradients in controlling the number and composition of the polychaete species, and evaluated the spatial changes of beta-diversity. In total, 299 individuals from 51 species and 24 families were identified. Salinity was the most important factor to define the environmental gradients (r 2 &gt; 0.83), but the variations in the number of species did not follow this spatial trend. The highest species richness was found in the eastern transect (mean: 12 spp./station, 78.0 ind./0.1 m2), while the western transect harbored a less diverse (mean: 6 spp./station) and less abundant fauna (mean: 21.67 ind./0.1 m2). A high similarity value (0.70) was found between the transects, but the distribution of each species was very irregular, which in turn caused a decrease in the similarity among stations at each transect (&lt; 0.54). Except among the middle stations of the western transect, where the nestedness component represented all the beta-diversity value (&#946;nes: 0.80 to 0.88), the species turnover (&#946;sim: 0.38-1.0) was the dominant factor of the total dissimilarity among the polychaetes inhabiting Términos Lagoon.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen En este estudio se analizaron los cambios faunísticos a lo largo de 2 transectos (5 estaciones cada uno) en la laguna de Términos. Para ello, se examinó el rol de los gradientes ambientales en el control del número y composición de las especies de poliquetos, asimismo se evaluaron los cambios espaciales de la diversidad beta. Se identificaron 299 individuos de 51 especies y 24 familias. La salinidad fue el factor que determinó el gradiente ambiental (r 2 &gt; 0.83), pero las variaciones en el número de especies no siguieron esta tendencia espacial. La riqueza específica más alta se registró en el transecto oriental (media: 12 spp./estación, 78.0 ind./0.1 m2), mientras que el transecto occidental albergó a la fauna menos diversa (media: 6 spp./estación) y menos abundante (media: 21.67 ind./0.1 m2). Los transectos tuvieron una alta similitud faunística (0.70), pero la distribución de cada especie fue muy irregular, por lo que la similitud entre las estaciones de cada transecto disminuyó (&lt; 0.54). Excepto entre las estaciones medias del transecto occidental, donde el componente de anidación representó el valor total de la diversidad beta (&#946;nes: 0.80 a 0.88), el reemplazo de especies (&#946;sim: 0.38-1.0) fue el factor dominante de la disimilitud total entre los poliquetos de la laguna de Términos.]]></p></abstract>
