In this study we report the species richness and abundance of the saturniids captured in a fragment of tropical semi-deciduous forest in central Veracruz, Mexico. The moths were attracted using 250 W mercury vapor lamp 1 night per month from September 2014 to August 2015. Thirty-one species belonging to 18 genera, 2 tribes and 4 subfamilies were determined. The total number of species constitutes 6.87% and 30.39% of the species known from Mexico and Veracruz, respectively. Coverage-based rarefaction and an extrapolation curve showed high diversity compared with previous studies in Mexico. Antheraea polyphemus mexicana, Automeris montezuma, Citheronia lobesi jordani, Hylesia coinopus, Molippa ninfa, and Pseudodirphia mexicana are endemic from Mexico. The highest richness and abundance of species were observed in May with 77% of the species collected during this month. These variables are thought to extend periods of flight activity for copulations. This study provides a survey of Saturniidae family species richness and abundance in one of the most diverse, but disturbed ecosystems of Veracruz.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen: Los inventarios de especies, en particular de polillas de gran tamaño como las Saturniidae son de relevancia debido a su susceptibilidad a condiciones ambientales y por sus importantes interacciones ecológicas. En este estudio reportamos la abundancia y riqueza de satúrnidos capturados en un bosque tropical subcaducifolio en el centro de Veracruz, México. La colecta se realizó una noche por mes de septiembre del 2014 a agosto del 2015, utilizando una lámpara de vapor de mercurio de 250 W. Se determinaron 31 especies de 18 géneros, 4 subfamilias y 2 tribus. El registro constituye el 6.87% y el 30.39% de las especies conocidas para México y Veracruz, respectivamente. Las curvas de rarefacción y extrapolación mostraron alta diversidad comparada con estudios previos en México. Las especies Antheraea polyphemus mexicana, Automeris montezuma, Citheronia lobesi jordani, Hylesia coinopus, Molippa ninfa y Pseudodirphia mexicana son endémicas de México. La riqueza y abundancia más alta de especies se registró en el mes de mayo con el 77% de las especies colectadas durante este mes. La riqueza y abundancia de insectos se incrementa conforme aumenta la temperatura y la evapotranspiración. Se considera que estas variables extienden los periodos de actividad de vuelo para la cópula. Este estudio provee evidencia de la riqueza y abundancia de Saturniidae en uno de los ecosistemas de Veracruz más diversos y con muchas alteraciones.]]></p></abstract>
