Los primeros registros datan de 1847, época en que J. Agardh citó a Polysiphonia perpusilla y P. dictyurus. A la fecha la familia está representada en México, en su costa del Pacífico por 28 géneros que contienen 100 especies, mientras que para la región mexicana del Atlántico se tienen registrados 23 géneros que contienen 80 especies. En estas 2 regiones se comparten 13 géneros, lo que da un total de 36 géneros de la familia en las costas de México, lo cual representa un 16.1% respecto a los géneros registrados mundialmente (224) y un 19% para las especies mundiales (933). Las especies están distribuidas en 17 entidades costeras de la República Mexicana, siendo Baja California, Baja California Sur y Quintana Roo los estados que más registros contienen.]]></p></abstract>

    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Introducci&oacute;n</b></font></p>
    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">A diferencia de la bot&aacute;nica vascular, en la que los resultados sobre la biodiversidad los presentan a nivel de familias taxon&oacute;micas, la bot&aacute;nica criptog&aacute;mica se aproxima generalmente a nivel de divisi&oacute;n. Quiz&aacute; una explicaci&oacute;n de ello es la apabullante diversidad en cada familia vascular, sin embargo, los antecedentes sobre estudios de macroalgas para las costas mexicanas muestran que la ficoflora debe y puede tambi&eacute;n aproximarse por el nivel familiar, debido principalmente a la gran cantidad de familias por divisi&oacute;n (Guiry y Guiry, 2013). Otro elemento importante de aproximaci&oacute;n a este nivel es la monofilia presente en estas categor&iacute;as, no as&iacute; en los grupos algales a nivel de phylum o clase. En esta ocasi&oacute;n nuestra contribuci&oacute;n responde a ello, es decir se aborda una importante familia monofil&eacute;tica de algas rojas en las costas mexicanas, con la intenci&oacute;n de poner en evidencia su diversidad y que esta aproximaci&oacute;n sea de mayor uso para trabajos de &iacute;ndole taxon&oacute;mica, ecol&oacute;gica, biogeogr&aacute;fica y de conservaci&oacute;n.</font></p>
    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">La familia Rhodomelaceae Harvey (1853:9) es una de las 8 familias que actualmente conforman el orden Ceramiales (Choi et al., 2008; Wynne, 2011). Su posici&oacute;n filogen&eacute;tica se considera como la m&aacute;s evolucionada dentro del orden por presentar la fecundaci&oacute;n directa de la c&eacute;lula auxiliar y su temprana formaci&oacute;n, adem&aacute;s del alto grado de desarrollo del pericarpo y de las c&eacute;lulas protectoras (Scagel, 1953; Kim et al., 2000). Los caracteres que distinguen a las especies de esta familia son: presencia de tricoblastos e inicio del pericarpo antes de la fertilizaci&oacute;n (Hommersand, 1963). El primer registro data de 1847, &eacute;poca en que Harvey cit&oacute; como g&eacute;nero y especie tipo a <i>Rhodomela subfusca</i> (Woodward) C. Agardh, en la localidad de Cromer, Norfolk, Inglaterra (Woodward, 1791), mientras que para M&eacute;xico se tienen como primeros registros de la familia a <i>Polysiphonia perpusilla</i> J. Agardh (ahora como: <i>Taenioma perpusillum</i> (J. Agardh) J. Agardh) y <i>P. dictyurus</i> J. Agardh (ahora como: <i>Tayloriella dictyurus</i> (J. Agardh) Kylin) realizados por J. Agardh (1847) en las costas del Pac&iacute;fico mexicano.</font></p>
    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Sus representantes alcanzan tallas desde unos cuantos mil&iacute;metros hasta 30 cent&iacute;metros, expresando niveles de organizaci&oacute;n filamentosos (<a href="/img/revistas/rmbiodiv/v85sene/a7f1.jpg" target="_blank">Figs. 1&#45;6</a>) y pseudoparenquimatosos (<a href="/img/revistas/rmbiodiv/v85sene/a7f2.jpg" target="_blank">Figs. 7&#45;13</a>), con la condici&oacute;n polisif&oacute;nica estricta (Van Den Hoek et al., 1995). La mayor&iacute;a se distribuye en zonas tropicales, subtropicales y templadas, ocupando diversos ambientes intermareales y en menor proporci&oacute;n los submareales. Todas las especies de esta familia presentan el ciclo de vida t&iacute;pico de la alternancia de generaciones denominado diplobi&oacute;ntico haplo&#45;diploide (Bold y Wynne, 1998), representado com&uacute;nmente por el g&eacute;nero <i>Polysiphonia</i> Greville.</font></p>
    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Trabajos de &iacute;ndole flor&iacute;stica y monogr&aacute;fica han dado cuenta de la diversidad espec&iacute;fica de algunos g&eacute;neros presentes en las costas mexicanas, resaltan para la costa Pac&iacute;fica: Setchell y Gardner (1924,1930); Dawson (1944, 1963); Taylor (1945); Abbott y Hollenberg (1976); Hollenberg (1961, 1967, 1968a, 1968b); Hollenberg y Norris (1977); Sent&iacute;es et al. (1990, 1995); Dreckmann y Sent&iacute;es (1994); Pedroche et al. (1995); M&eacute;ndez&#45;Trejo et al. (2012) y Pedroche et al.(2013). Mientras que para la costa Atl&aacute;ntica: B&oslash;rgesen (1918), Taylor (1960); Dreckmann (1998); Littler y Littler (2000); Sent&iacute;es y Fujii (2002); Cetz&#45;Navarro et al. (2008) y Wynne (2011).</font></p>
    <p align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>
    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Diversidad</b></font></p>
    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En un pa&iacute;s como M&eacute;xico, que cuenta con 2 grandes regiones costeras, el Pac&iacute;fico y el Atl&aacute;ntico, las exploraciones ficol&oacute;gicas y el estudio se han dado en tiempos y en formas diferentes. Evidentemente, los trabajos van desde los listados de especies, pasan por el registro de especies nuevas para la ciencia, y llegan hasta el tratamiento monogr&aacute;fico o de revisi&oacute;n de grupos particulares.</font></p>

<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Los fic&oacute;logos mexicanos iniciaron la investigaci&oacute;n formal de las algas marinas hace aproximadamente 51 a&ntilde;os (Pedroche et al., 2009). Durante ese tiempo han dominado los estudios de &iacute;ndole flor&iacute;stica y lo complementan los que tienen tem&aacute;ticas particulares: taxonom&iacute;a, ecolog&iacute;a, fisiolog&iacute;a, biogeograf&iacute;a y filogenia. Todos ellos son los que han incrementado el registro y la descripci&oacute;n de las especies presentes en las costas mexicanas.</font></p>
    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">La diversidad actual de macroalgas marinas mexicanas de la divisi&oacute;n Rhodophyta se estima en 1 855 nombres de especies para el Pac&iacute;fico, mientras que para el Atl&aacute;ntico oscilan alrededor de 890 (Pedroche y Sent&iacute;es, 2003; Ortega et al., 2001). En este panorama y como producto de los trabajos en flor&iacute;stica, morfolog&iacute;a y recientemente con biolog&iacute;a molecular, esta familia est&aacute; representada en M&eacute;xico, en su costa del Pac&iacute;fico por 28 g&eacute;neros que contienen 100 especies, las cuales representan un 5.4% a nivel nacional (Pedroche et al., 2013), mientras que para la regi&oacute;n mexicana del Atl&aacute;ntico se tienen registrados 23 g&eacute;neros que contienen 80 especies, las cuales representan un 9% a nivel nacional (Ortega et al., 2001). En estas 2 regiones se comparten 13 g&eacute;neros, lo que da un total de 36 g&eacute;neros de esta familia en las costas de M&eacute;xico (<a href="/img/revistas/rmbiodiv/v85sene/a7c1.jpg" target="_blank">Cuadro 1</a>), lo cual representa un 16.1% respecto a los g&eacute;neros registrados mundialmente (224) y un 19% (180) para las especies mundiales (933) (Guiry y Guiry, 2013).</font></p>
    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">De las 180 especies de Rhodomelaceae descritas para M&eacute;xico, s&oacute;lo 10 de ellas (18%), han sido registradas como end&eacute;micas para el golfo de California (Espinoza&#45;Avalos, 1993), lo cual representa un relativamente alto grado de endemismo para esa regi&oacute;n. Es notoria la falta de datos documentados de endemismos para otras regiones del pa&iacute;s, pero si podemos confirmar que muchas especies tienen distribuci&oacute;n en pa&iacute;ses adyacentes, mientras que algunas de ellas presentan una distribuci&oacute;n que abarca diversas regiones biogeogr&aacute;ficas mundiales.</font></p>
    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Respecto a su distribuci&oacute;n en las costas mexicanas, las entidades federativas con mayor n&uacute;mero de g&eacute;neros y especies (g/e) registrados son: Baja California Sur (21/68), Baja California (20/69) y Quintana Roo (21/68). Cabe mencionar que los estados donde se ha encontrado un mayor n&uacute;mero de especies de esta familia y de otros grupos algales en general, son los que se encuentran en las pen&iacute;nsulas: Baja California y Yucat&aacute;n, debido a que es en estos estados es donde laboran m&aacute;s especialistas nacionales y extranjeros y/o donde se han realizado m&aacute;s recolectas (<a href="#c2">Cuadro 2</a>).</font></p>

    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Un aspecto que puede influir para la eficaz identificaci&oacute;n y aproximaci&oacute;n en cuanto a la diversidad de los grupos es su nivel de organizaci&oacute;n, el cual se expresa en estos representantes de Rhodomelaceae con morfolog&iacute;a filamentosa (en 19 g&eacute;neros), mientras que los 17 restantes su nivel de organizaci&oacute;n es pseudoparenquimatoso.</font></p>
    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Como parte del tratamiento a nivel gen&eacute;rico se resalta que <i>Polysiphonia</i> Greville es el m&aacute;s diverso con 26 y 18 especies en el Pac&iacute;fico y Atl&aacute;ntico, respectivamente, sigui&eacute;ndole en orden num&eacute;rico <i>Laurencia</i> J.V. Lamouroux con 22 y 14 especies en las regiones mencionadas. Este &uacute;ltimo, ha recibido especial inter&eacute;s por parte de especialistas que han aportado registros nuevos, circunscripciones de especies como combinaciones y estatus nuevos y taxa nuevos para la ciencia en nuestro pa&iacute;s y &aacute;reas adyacentes (Sent&iacute;es et al., 2001; Sent&iacute;es y Fujii, 2002; D&iacute;az&#45;Larrea et al., 2007; Sent&iacute;es y D&iacute;az&#45;Larrea, 2008; Cassano et al., 2009, 2012; Sent&iacute;es et al., 2009, 2011, 2013; Mach&iacute;n&#45;S&aacute;nchez et al., 2012; Mateo&#45;Cid et al., 2013).</font></p>
    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Se puede afirmar que el n&uacute;mero total de especies para ambos litorales se ir&aacute; modificando, entre otros factores por el incremento en el conocimiento de esta disciplina, mediante la combinaci&oacute;n de las aproximaciones morfol&oacute;gicas, el uso de la biolog&iacute;a molecular y las aproximaciones filogen&eacute;ticas, la exploraci&oacute;n de zonas poco conocidas, como son parte de las costas de entidades federativas con territorio costero en nuestro pa&iacute;s.</font></p>
    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En conclusi&oacute;n, el conocimiento taxon&oacute;mico que se tiene actualmente de Rhodomelaceae en M&eacute;xico (180 especies y 37 g&eacute;neros) dista mucho de representar en su totalidad la extraordinaria riqueza de especies presentes en el pa&iacute;s.</font></p>
