Aquí se presenta el registro de un individuo de la musaraña endémica de México Cryptotis mexicana recolectado en Veracruz, México, que presenta esta condición. Esta coloración, considerada anormal en estado silvestre, puede incrementar la presión de selección sobre esos individuos. Moreover, this genetic&#45;based condition reflects on the low levels of genetic variability within natural populations.</font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Key words:</b> pigmentation, white fur, small mammals, Soricidae, Veracruz.</font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Existen 32 especies de mam&iacute;feros del g&eacute;nero <i>Cryptotis</i> (orden Soricomorpha: familia Soricidae) y s&oacute;lo se distribuyen en el continente Americano (Choate, 1973; Woodman, 2010). En M&eacute;xico habitan 14 especies de estos peque&ntilde;os insect&iacute;voros, siendo el pa&iacute;s con la mayor diversidad taxon&oacute;mica (Hutterer, 2005; Carraway, 2007). A pesar de ello, las musara&ntilde;as son un grupo poco conocido en M&eacute;xico (Cervantes et al., 2008; Cervantes y Guevara, 2010). Algunas especies s&oacute;lo poseen descripciones originales y solamente se conocen de la localidad tipo o carecen de informaci&oacute;n b&aacute;sica sobre su biolog&iacute;a. Por lo tanto, nuestro equipo de trabajo se interes&oacute; en la recolecta y estudio de las musara&ntilde;as mexicanas del g&eacute;nero <i>Cryptotis</i> para documentar su identidad taxon&oacute;mica y distribuci&oacute;n geogr&aacute;fica detallada.</font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">El 5 de enero de 2005 se captur&oacute; un ejemplar macho de <i>Cryptotis mexicana</i> que presentaba una anormalidad conocida como leucismo, condici&oacute;n que se refiere a la reducci&oacute;n de la pigmentaci&oacute;n parcial o total y que mantiene la coloraci&oacute;n normal de los ojos y la piel (Jehl, 1985; Acevedo y Aguayo, 2008). El ejemplar de musara&ntilde;a (<a href="/img/revistas/rmbiodiv/v82n2/a34f1.jpg" target="_blank">Fig. 1</a>) fue recolectado a 0.5 km S de Puerto del Aire, Municipio Acultzingo, Veracruz, M&eacute;xico, 18&ordm;41'22"N, 97&ordm;20'16"W, a 2 380 m snm, bajo el permiso de colector FAUT 0002, otorgado por la Secretar&iacute;a de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales a F. A. Cervantes. Este ejemplar se colect&oacute; con trampa de ca&iacute;da (<i>pitfall</i>), utilizando botes de pl&aacute;stico de 1 lt de capacidad y atendiendo a las recomendaciones de Gannon et al. (2007) sobre cuidado y manejo de ejemplares durante la recolecta.</font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Posteriormente, el ejemplar se deposit&oacute; en la Colecci&oacute;n Nacional de Mam&iacute;feros (CNMA) del Instituto de Biolog&iacute;a, de la Universidad Nacional Aut&oacute;noma de M&eacute;xico, en la Ciudad de M&eacute;xico, con el n&uacute;mero de cat&aacute;logo 42738. El ejemplar presenta partes de color blanco at&iacute;picos en la cabeza, el dorso, el vientre y la cola. Normalmente, el pelaje de la especie es de color pardo oscuro y ligeramente m&aacute;s p&aacute;lido en el vientre (Choate, 1973). Las medidas del ejemplar son 89 mm de longitud total, 25 mm de cola vertebral, 12 mm de la pata derecha trasera, 3 mm de oreja y 5.5 g de peso. No existen m&aacute;s ejemplares de musara&ntilde;a con esta condici&oacute;n en la CNMA, ni registrados en la literatura para el g&eacute;nero <i>Cryptotis</i> en M&eacute;xico, seg&uacute;n nuestro conocimiento. El lugar de recolecta se caracteriza por parches aislados de bosque de encino (<i>Quercus</i>; Miranda y Hern&aacute;ndez, 1963), los cuales est&aacute;n severamente alterados debido a asentamientos humanos, ecoturismo, ganader&iacute;a y agricultura.</font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Algunos ejemplos de anormalidades en la coloraci&oacute;n del pelaje en musara&ntilde;as, como el albinismo y el leucismo, se han registrado para los g&eacute;neros <i>Blarina</i>, <i>Crocidura</i>, <i>Cryptotis</i>, <i>Neomys</i>, <i>Sorex</i> y <i>Suncus</i> (Elder, 1960; Dexter, 1961; Pucek, 1964; Moncrief y Anderson, 1997; Gelling, 2003; Jogahara et al., 2008), y no se sabe que tan comunes podr&iacute;an ser dichas anormalidades en las poblaciones naturales (Pucek, 1964; Jogahara et al., 2008). El leucismo en las musara&ntilde;as puede determinar sus posibilidades de sobrevivencia, ya que los individuos con esta condici&oacute;n son m&aacute;s visibles a los depredadores y, por lo tanto, aumentan las presiones de selecci&oacute;n contra ellos (Hafner y Hafner, 1987; Ch&#281;tnicki et al., 2007; Jogahara et al., 2008). Aparentemente, la selecci&oacute;n natural ha producido una baja frecuencia del alelo que produce el leucismo y presentarlo debe reducir la condici&oacute;n f&iacute;sica en la vida silvestre; de lo contrario el alelo podr&iacute;a extenderse (Rees, 2004). Los individuos con leucismo podr&iacute;an ser m&aacute;s comunes en poblaciones peque&ntilde;as y aisladas (Bensch et al., 2000; Ch&#281;tnicki et al., 2007), ya que la endogamia aumenta la probabilidad de que los alelos recesivos se expresen (Bensch et al., 2000).</font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">La interpretaci&oacute;n de la importancia biol&oacute;gica de los patrones at&iacute;picos de coloraci&oacute;n es a&uacute;n incierta. Sin embargo, se sabe que el leucismo puede proveer evidencia indirecta de la variabilidad gen&eacute;tica subyacente (Jehl, 1985), el cambio gen&eacute;tico para las variaciones en los atributos relacionados con la adecuaci&oacute;n y la estructura de las poblaciones (Acevedo y Aguayo, 2008). En el caso del leucismo, las causas son a menudo atribuidas a la expresi&oacute;n de alelos mutantes (Bensch et al., 2000), relacionados con la falta de producci&oacute;n de tirosinasa, una enzima que promueve la formaci&oacute;n de melanina (Sage, 1962; Krecs&aacute;k, 2008). Por lo anterior, es necesario efectuar estudios gen&eacute;ticos detallados para generar conocimiento sobre la causa de las anormalidades en la coloraci&oacute;n del pelaje (Jogahara et al., 2008). Estos estudios seguramente se ver&aacute;n enriquecidos con la publicaci&oacute;n de los datos obtenidos en campo y en las colecciones biol&oacute;gicas.</font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Agradecemos a las autoridades civiles y a los pobladores del municipio de Acultzingo, Veracruz, por brindarnos todo el apoyo invaluable para el desarrollo de nuestros estudios con musara&ntilde;as.</font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>  	    ]]></body>
