</abstract>

One source of stem cells is the human dental pulp, which can be obtained with simple and non-invasive procedures. For successfully isolating dental pulp cells it is vital to follow strict protocols, considering adequate techniques and the necessary care to avoid contamination from the moment of tooth extraction until its delivery in the transport medium. In this investigation, the objective was to compare two transport media and evaluate cell viability in both of them. Material and methods: Two groups were compared, the teeth of group 1 were transported in a medium with antibiotics penicillin-streptomycin; in group 2 the transport medium contained the above antibiotics plus amphotericin B. Thirty three teeth were collected from patients aged between 18 to 29 years. For the evaluation of cell viability, trypan blue dye was used; then, the cell count was performed with a hemocytometer using a microscope. Results: The mean number of cells and the percentage of cell viability were higher in group 2 than in group 1; there was a statistically significant difference between the groups. Discussion: A major quantity of viable cells was obtained using amphotericin B in the transport medium.
</abstract>
