Así que es importante determinar los efectos de la intervención periodontal durante el embarazo de preeclámpticas.  Objetivo: Determinar los efectos de la intervención periodontal sobre los parámetros clínicos periodontales como sangrado al sondeo, profundidad de bolsas y niveles de inserción clínica y el peso del recién nacido en pacientes hospitalizadas con diagnóstico de preeclampsia leve.  Métodos: En un ensayo clínico piloto controlado aleatorizado se evaluaron 57 embarazadas con diagnóstico de preeclampsia leve con presión sistólica/diastólica igual o superior a 160/110 mmHg que estaban admitidas en la unidad de alto riesgo obstétrico del Hospital Universitario del Valle (Cali, Colombia). Se evaluaron las características sociodemográficas, los aspectos médicos y periodontales. Veintiséis preeclámpticas fueron aleatorizadas al grupo con intervención periodontal (GIP) y 31 al grupo control o grupo de no intervención periodontal (GNIP). El análisis se realizó comparando los cambios en los parámetros periodontales y en las variables como parto prematuro y peso del recién nacido. La intervención periodontal consistió en detartarje y alisado subgingival sin antibióticos, ni clorhexidina en una cita con medios ultrasónicos e instrumentos manuales realizado por un periodoncista entrenado. Las variables dependientes fueron las variaciones en los parámetros periodontales y el percentil de peso del recién nacido ajustado a la edad gestacional.  Resultados: Las pacientes tuvieron un promedio de edad de 24.7 ± 6.4 años y una edad gestacional al ingreso de 32.3 ± 1.6 semanas. El diagnóstico periodontal más frecuente fue la periodontitis crónica (73% GIP vs GNIP 71%). Las preeclámpticas del grupo intervenido periodontalmente fueron más jóvenes (p = 0.03), primíparas (p = 0.027) y tuvieron mayor proteinuria al ingreso al estudio (p = 0.049). Aunque el GIP tuvo mayor pérdida de inserción clínica periodontal el resto de los parámetros clínicos periodontales fueron similares en los grupos de intervención y no intervención periodontal (GIP y GNIP). El tratamiento periodontal redujo de manera significante el sangrado y la profundidad al sondeo. El percentil de peso del recién nacido ajustado por edad gestacional al nacer fue similar en ambos grupos (percentil 47 rango 5-90 en GIP versus percentil 45 rango 5-95 en GNIP). El tratamiento periodontal no incrementa el bajo peso al nacer.  Conclusiones: La enfermedad periodontal es frecuente en mujeres con preeclampsia. El tratamiento periodontal en las preeclámpticas mejora los parámetros clínicos periodontales, pero no reduce la tasa de parto prematuro o el bajo peso al nacer.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract:  Background: Recent studies have demonstrated a positive relationship between periodontal disease, and adverse pregnancy outcome including preterm delivery and preeclampsia. Most randomized controlled clinical trials reveal that early periodontal intervention in pregnancy reduced adverse pregnancy outcomes such as preterm birth, miscarriage, and low weight newborn. There are no studies on the effects of periodontal intervention on preeclampsia.  Objective: To determine the effects of periodontal intervention on pregnancy outcome in preeclamptic women.  Methods: Fifty seven patients with mild preeclampsia with blood pressure levels &#8805;160/110 mmHg from the Hospital Universitario del Valle were included. Preeclamptic women were randomized in two groups, one in which periodontal intervention was performed after inclusion and another - control group (PNIG) in which the periodontal intervention was practiced after child delivery. Maternal socio-demographic, medical and periodontal data were gathered. Periodontal intervention group (PIG) included patients subjected to supragingival and subgingival cleaning with ultrasonic and manual devices in one appointment without clorhexidine. The periodontal parameters, premature delivery rate and the birth-weight rate were evaluated in both groups.  Results: Average age was 24.7 ± 6.4 years old. Gestational age average at inclusion was of 32.3 ± 1.6 weeks. Most of the recruited patients were nonparous. Chronic periodontitis was a frequent event (72%) Most social, demographic and periodontal conditions were similar between the groups but age (p = 0.03), proteinuria (0.049) and nulliparity (p = 0.02). Periodontal parameters improved among treated group and the percentile of birth-weight adjusted by gestational age showed not differences between groups (median percentile 47 range 5-90 PIG versus percentile 45 range 5-95).  Conclusion: Periodontitis is common in mild preeclampsia patients. Periodontal intervention improved periodontal clinical parameters but do not reduce premature birth and low birth weight rates.]]></p></abstract>
