These effluents are characterized by a high organic matter content, that varies from 100 g COD/L for leachates characterized during the rainy season to 119 g COD/L for the dry season ones. A two-phase acidogenic-methanogenic anaerobic system was implemented for the treatment of these effluents diluted with municipal wastewater to attain feeding concentrations from 4.9 to 26.5 g COD/L. A maximum formation rate of 0.306 g VFA COD /L-d and organic matter conversion to VFA of 76.3% were attained in the acidogenic reactor, as well as small amounts of hydrogen in the biogas. This pre-treated effluent was fed to the methanogenic reactor, which attained a methane productivity of 6.4 L CH4/L-d equivalent to 390 kW-h per m3 of raw treated leachate or 3.2 kW-h per kg treated COD. The acidogenic-methanogenic system maintained a removal efficiency of 95.3% showing to be a suitable technology for the environmental impact reduction of this effluent and for biofuels production.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen: La planta de composteo de Bordo Poniente, uno de los tiraderos de basura de la Ciudad de México, procesa diariamente 2,500 toneladas de basura orgánica en pilas al aire libre, las cuales generan alrededor de 1000 m3 de lixiviados por día. Estos efluentes se caracterizan por un alto de materia orgánica, que varía de 100g DQO/L para los de época de secas. Para el tratamiento de estos efluentes diluidos con agua residual municipal, se implementó un sistema anaerobio acidogénico-metanogénico alimentado con 4.9 a 26.5 g DQO/L. En el reactor acidogénico se obtuvo una velocidad de formación de 0.306 g AGV DQO /L-d y una conversión máxima de materia orgánica a AGV de 76.3%, así como pequeñas cantidades de hidrógeno en el biogás. Este efluente pre-tratado fue alimentado al reactor metanogénico, que alcanzó una productividad de 6.4 L CH4/L-d, equivalente a 390 kW-h por m3 de lixiviado crudo tratado ó 3.2 kW.h por kg DQO tratado. El sistema acidogénico-metanogénico mantuvo una eficiencia de remoción de 95.3% demostrando que es una tecnología apropiada para la reducción del impacto ambiental de este efluente y para la producción de biocombustibles.]]></p></abstract>
