Se analizó plomo en utensilios de 49 hogares, en alimentos, agua y sangre. Se evaluó ingesta de hierro, calcio y factores de exposición a intoxicaciones con plomo. El estudio se limitó a la participación voluntaria y a información otorgada mediante entrevistas. 80.3 % de los utensilios con plomo pertenecen a 8 de 10 hogares. El plomo en alimentos promedió 2.95 µg g-1 y en sangre 21.5 µg g-1 sin diferencia significativa entre usuarios de utensilios positivos y negativos. La ingesta de hierro es deficiente en 82.0 % y calcio en 87.7 % de los entrevistados con una correlación negativa con los niveles de plomo en sangre, aunque no significativa. Niveles altos de Pb en sangre y usar utensilios de barro aumentan la prevalencia de enfermedades en 40 y 99 % respectivamente. Existe el riesgo de intoxicación al emplear utensilios de barro y la baja ingesta de hierro y calcio; sin embargo, la presencia de plomo no es exclusiva al uso de utensilios de barro, lo que sugiere haya otras fuentes ambientales del elemento.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Influence of glazed clay utensils and iron and calcium intake on the risk of lead poisoning in populations from the Sonora River was evaluated. Lead in clay utensils from 49 households and the amount of lead in food, water, and human blood samples was analyzed. Iron and calcium intake were assessed, and exposure factors for the prevalence of lead poisoning were evaluated. The study was limited to voluntary participation and information provided through surveys. Lead was present in 80.3 % of the utensils that belonged to 80 % of households. Average quantities of lead in food were 2.95 µg g-1, and 21.48 µg g-1 in blood with no significant difference between users of leaded and lead-free clay utensils. Iron intake was deficient in 82.0 % and calcium intake in 87.7 % of participants, with a weak negative correlation with blood lead levels. High blood Pb levels and use of clay utensils increase prevalence of lead-related diseases by 40 and 99 %, respectively. There is a risk of lead poisoning when clay utensils are used, which is enhanced by poor intake of iron and calcium. However, the presence of lead was not exclusively from the use of leaded clay, suggesting other sources of lead.]]></p></abstract>
