Los colores varían gradualmente (en tonalidad, claridad, saturación), tal como las formas, texturas, cesías (transparencia, oscuridad, brillo) y movimientos. Ahora bien, la semiótica visual ha intentado frecuentemente construir categorías verbales que reducen y simplifican el análisis visual en oposiciones o categorías cerradas mediante una lógica binaria. Pero no necesitamos verbalizar situaciones visuales para producir interpretantes. Los sistemas sígnicos capaces de representar evoluciones graduales, cambios, acumulaciones y variaciones ofrecen un conocimiento más rico del mundo visual. A partir de estos señalamientos, argumentaremos que una perspectiva semiótica basada en una concepción gradualista &#8212;con antecedentes en biología, geología, humanidades, historia, economía, etc.&#8212; permite enfrentar las complejidades propias del análisis visual.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract The visual world and its signs are essentially continuous, without oppositions or jumps. Colors vary gradually (in hue, lightness, saturation), as do forms, textures, cesias (transparency, darkness, gloss) and movements. Now, visual semiotics has often attempted to construct verbal categories, which reduce and simplify visual analysis into oppositions or closed categories, by means of a binary logic. But we do not need to verbalize visual situations to produce interpretants. Sign systems capable of representing gradual evolutions, changes, accumulations, and variations offer a richer knowledge of the visual world. From these points, we will argue that a semiotic perspective based on a gradualist conception &#8212;with antecedents in biology, geology, humanities, history, economics, etc.&#8212; allows us to face the complexities of visual analysis.]]></p></abstract>

Les couleurs varient progressivement (en tonalité, clarté, saturation), tout comme les formes, les textures, les césies (transparence, obscurité, brillance) et les mouvements. Or, la sémiotique visuelle a souvent tenté de construire des catégories verbales, qui réduisent et simplifient l'analyse visuelle en oppositions ou catégories fermées, au moyen d'une logique binaire. Mais nous n'avons pas besoin de verbaliser des situations visuelles pour produire des interprétants. Les systèmes de signes capables de représenter des évolutions, des changements, des accumulations et des variations graduelles offrent une compréhension plus riche du monde visuel. À partir de ces points, nous soutiendrons qu'une perspective sémiotique basée sur une conception gradualiste &#8212; avec des antécédents en biologie, géologie, sciences humaines, histoire, économie, etc. &#8212; nous permet d'affronter les complexités de l'analyse visuelle.]]></p></abstract>
