<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Para entender la transici&oacute;n nutricia, debemos recordar los procesos de cambio que la preceden o acompa&ntilde;an. El primero es la transici&oacute;n demogr&aacute;fica,<sup>1</sup> en la cual se cambia de un patr&oacute;n de alta fertilidad y mortalidad a uno de baja fertilidad y mortalidad. El segundo es la transici&oacute;n epidemiol&oacute;gica, que es el proceso caracterizado por cambios en los patrones de morbimortalidad de las diferentes poblaciones del mundo, que pasan de una alta prevalencia de enfermedades infecciosas asociadas a desnutrici&oacute;n, hambre y pobre saneamiento del medio ambiente, a una alta prevalencia de enfermedades cr&oacute;nicas no transmisibles. La transici&oacute;n nutricia est&aacute; relacionada en forma muy estrecha con estas transiciones, con cambios importantes en la alimentaci&oacute;n, mayor consumo cal&oacute;rico, incremento en la ingesta de grasa, az&uacute;cares y alimentos de origen animal, y reducci&oacute;n de la actividad f&iacute;sica.<sup>1&#45;3</sup></font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Desde hace m&aacute;s de 20 a&ntilde;os, Am&eacute;rica Latina ha sufrido importantes transformaciones en sus condiciones de salud, asociadas a cambios demogr&aacute;ficos y a procesos r&aacute;pidos de urbanizaci&oacute;n. Abala y col.,<sup>4</sup> en 1997, despu&eacute;s de analizar cuatro pa&iacute;ses latinoamericanos, dentro de los cuales estaba incluido M&eacute;xico, hicieron &eacute;nfasis en que se esperaba un incremento en las enfermedades no transmisibles en la siguiente d&eacute;cada, como sucedi&oacute;. Stevens y col.,<sup>5</sup> documentan c&oacute;mo M&eacute;xico se encuentra en un estado avanzado de transici&oacute;n epidemiol&oacute;gica, con predominio de enfermedades y accidentes asociados a causas no infecciosas, como sobrepeso y obesidad, hiperglucemia y alcoholismo, responsables de un deterioro de la salud y muertes, cada vez m&aacute;s frecuentes.</font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Los dos art&iacute;culos publicados en este n&uacute;mero por V&aacute;squez&#45;Garibay y col.,<sup>6,7</sup> analizan esta transici&oacute;n con un enfoque en la poblaci&oacute;n materno&#45;infantil de nuestro pa&iacute;s y de Am&eacute;rica Latina, recopilando experiencias nacionales importantes y de otras regiones fuera de M&eacute;xico. Hacen &eacute;nfasis en que las deficiencias nutricionales cr&oacute;nicas que se manifiestan con baja estatura se siguen presentando, la frecuencia de obesidad se ha incrementado considerablemente, y al hecho de que en una proporci&oacute;n considerable de hogares en poblaci&oacute;n en transici&oacute;n, coexiste un miembro de bajo peso con uno o m&aacute;s con sobrepeso, situaci&oacute;n denominada "hogares con doble carga".</font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Tambi&eacute;n se han asociado a la transici&oacute;n epidemiol&oacute;gica, influencias tempranas en la alimentaci&oacute;n del lactante, como es aumento r&aacute;pido de peso en los primeros d&iacute;as de vida, ingesta elevada de prote&iacute;nas en el primer a&ntilde;o de vida, y bajo peso al nacimiento, con crecimiento lento en los dos primeros a&ntilde;os de vida y rebote de adiposidad m&aacute;s r&aacute;pido de lo esperado.<sup>8&#45;10</sup></font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">V&aacute;squez&#45;Garibay y col.,<sup>7</sup> plantean intervenciones de Salud P&uacute;blica para frenar o evitar esta transici&oacute;n nutricia. A nivel global se han sugerido intervenciones nutricionales en los lactantes y ni&ntilde;os, para la prevenci&oacute;n de obesidad, ateroesclerosis y del s&iacute;ndrome metab&oacute;lico, y en etapas tempranas de la vida, estimular la lactancia materna, y promover cambios en la alimentaci&oacute;n del lactante con f&oacute;rmulas l&aacute;cteas industrializadas y alimentaci&oacute;n complementaria, cuando no es posible la lactancia materna.<sup>11</sup></font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>  	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Referencias</b></font></p>  	    <!-- ref --><p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">1.
