Los beneficios esperados consisten en transitar a la educación superior y tener trabajos que no sean físicamente demandantes. Las expectativas de los jóvenes se contrastan con las circunstancias que los estudiantes enfrentan al graduarse en Oaxaca, entidad donde se realizó la investigación. Los jóvenes de comunidades rurales y marginadas de manera difícil pueden obtener del bachillerato los beneficios esperados, lo cual analizamos a la luz de dos teorías. Por un lado, trabajamos con la explicación que Pierre Bourdieu brinda sobre el rol de la escuela en la reproducción de la desigualdad social. Por otro, para los hallazgos de dos escuelas en comunidades indígenas usamos el concepto de colonialismo interno. Ambos enfoques consideran la apropiación de la ideología dominante, lo cual permite entender por qué los jóvenes de estas comunidades valoran la educación a pesar de que no obtienen los beneficios esperados.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: This multiple case study analyzes the benefits that the youth in rural marginalized communities of Oaxaca expect to obtain from a high school diploma. The findings show that graduating from high school was a step toward graduation from a higher education institution. Also, students interviewed thought that high school completion would allow them not to work as peasants. Unfortunately, the benefits students expect to obtain are hardly achievable. The findings from this research are analyzed through a theoretical lens containing two theories. First, we use the theories of social reproduction proposed by Pierre Bourdieu to understand the limited benefits of cultural capital (in the form of a school degree) in a context of marginalization. Then, we analyze findings for indigenous students through internal colonialism. Both theories shed light on why students highly value education: it is perceived to be associated with economic and social benefits. However, such association does not hold in reality.]]></p></abstract>
