</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
Abstract One of the main circumstances that limit women’s participation in science and has an impact on their professional aspirations has to do with gender stereotypes about science assimilated since childhood, which are evident in representations of scientists. This study is part of a line of research on gender and science with an intersectional approach carried out in Panama, and seeks to identify gender stereotypes in professional aspirations and representations of scientific people. The study was conducted using the Draw-A-Scientist Test (DAST) technique with fourth grade students from a diversified sample of public elementary schools in the country. The results revealed the impact of gender stereotypes as well as close and well-known role models, on the professional and academic expectations of students and their representation of scientists. Gender differences were observed, mostly in the representation of male and female scientists. These differences do not seem to be preventing girls from aspiring to scientific careers, however they do have an impact on the types of scientific careers to which they aspire, which differ from those to which boys aspire. Additionally, territorial and sociocultural differences, as well as the lack of self-representation in ethnic terms in the drawings, stand out even more noticeable than gender differences. This phenomenon reveals that the impact of ethnic-racial bias is even greater than that of gender. In general, a hegemonic representation of scientists is present among boys and girls including evidence of ethnic-racial and gender biases.
</abstract>
