La explosión de vapor se recomienda frecuentemente para mejorar la biodegradabilidad de biomasa lignocelulósica. Ante ello, en este trabajo de investigación se evaluó la producción de biogás y bioetanol utilizando bagazo de agave sometido a los pretratamientos de explosión de vapor y una subsecuente hidrólisis enzimática. La explosión de vapor se realizó con una presión absoluta de 0.98 MPa originando una temperatura de 179 °C con una duración de 22 minutos, seguida de una liberación súbita de la presión. La hidrólisis enzimática se realizó al residual sólido por un periodo de 12 horas. La producción de biogás a partir de las dos fracciones líquidas obtenidas fue para la explosión de vapor de 553 ± 26 mLN por gramo de demanda química de oxígeno (DQO) y 578 ± 5 mLN g-1 DQO para la hidrólisis enzimática con una concentración de metano de 53 ± 2 % en el biogás para ambos sustratos. De acuerdo con el balance energético, se logró concentrar hasta 20.9 % del contenido energético del bagazo. La alternativa con fermentación alcohólica del hidrolizado enzimático restringido a fermentar solo hexosas, resulta en un rendimiento de 13 % menos. Atendiendo los retos de valorizar el agave bagazo, ambas vías se consideran como una medida para un manejo más sustentable de este residuo.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Tequila industry waste streams (namely agave bagasse), lack valorization processes, for example, biogas conversion in current production schemes. Steam explosion treatment is widely recommended to enhance biodegradability of lignocellulosic material. This investigation evaluates the production of biogas and bioethanol using agave bagasse subjected to steam explosion followed by enzymatic hydrolysis. Steam explosion applied under a vapor pressure of 0.98 MPa raised the vessel temperature to 179 °C and after 22 minutes a sudden pressure release was induced. Subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis was employed to the residual solid fraction for 12 hours. Anaerobic batch tests resulted in 553 ± 26 mLN per gram of chemical oxygen demand (COD), when steam exploded hydrolysate was digested, and 578 ± 4 mLN g-1 COD for the digestion of enzymatic hydrolysate. The methane content for both experiments was 53 ± 2 %. Energy balance conversions resulted in an energy recovery of up to 20.9 % relating to the energy contend of original agave bagasse. The biogas pathway is 13 % more effective than ethanol fermentation of enzymatic hydrolysate due to a wider spectrum of substrates than C6-sugars fermentation alone. Thus, in view of enhancing the chain of economic value added for treatment of agave bagasse, pathways outlined are likely to play a key role in future sustainable residue management.]]></p></abstract>
