En México, el sector automotriz es uno de los sectores industriales estratégicos de la economía. A pesar de ello, hasta ahora no existe evidencia consistente sobre cómo los flujos de carga automotrices presionan a la infraestructura ferroviaria de México como resultado de la fuerte competencia global. En este sentido, la modelación espacial de los flujos de carga es una parte esencial del proceso de planeación del transporte. El objetivo de este artículo es presentar un análisis espacial de los flujos de carga automotrices desde una perspectiva de fluidez en la cadena de suministro. La evidencia revela que a pesar de que México es actualmente un elemento clave del sistema de producción automotriz global, los flujos de carga automotriz están extremadamente delimitados a las interacciones entre las plantas de manufactura localizadas dentro de la región del Tratado de Libre Comercio para América del Norte (TLCAN). Como resultado, se direcciona el proceso de planeación del transporte en México hacia un fortalecimiento de los corredores de carga del TLCAN. De esta forma,, el proceso de planeación deja de lado su rol crítico como soporte a la configuración de agrupamientos industriales locales con mayor valor agregado. Este caso representa claramente el riesgoso dilema de las economías emergentes cuando buscan mejorar el desempeño de las cadenas de suministro de las empresas globales instaladas en sus territorios y, al mismo tiempo, integrar mayor valor agregado local.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Railway infrastructure is a critical element for automotive companies&#8217; supply chain effectiveness as well as for countries&#8217; competitiveness where they are located. In Mexico, automotive sector is a strategic industrial sector of its economy. Even though, until now there is not robust evidence about how automotive freight flows stress railway infrastructure in Mexico as a result of its fierce global competition. In that sense, spatial modelling of freight flows is an essential part of the transportation planning process. Thus, the objective of this paper is to present a spatial analysis of automotive freight flows based on the fluidity supply chain approach. Evidence revealed that even if Mexico is currently a key member of the global automotive production system, automotive freight flows are extremely circumscribed to interactions between manufacturing facilities located inside the NAFTA (North American Trade Agreement) region. Consequently, they are driving the Mexican transportation planning process to reinforce NAFTA transport freight corridors. Hence, this planning process is leaving aside its critical role in supporting configuration of regional industrial clusters with more local value added. This case clearly represents the risky dilemma of emerging economies when looking for improving global supply chains performance and at the same time, integrating local value added.]]></p></abstract>
