Los estilos analizados son el directivo, orientador y ausente. Para alcanzar el objetivo se aplicó un instrumento que evalúa dichos estilos a 267 directores(as) de tesis y otro equivalente a 285 tesistas. Los resultados indican que ambos grupos informaron percibir, por orden de preponderancia, estilo orientador, directivo y ausente. Además, el área de conocimiento influye en el estilo de dirección asumido y para ambos grupos el estilo directivo está más presente en las ciencias naturales que en las sociales. Finalmente, los y las tesistas suelen necesitar mayor guía y orientación de sus directores(as), al definirlos en mayor medida como ausentes.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: This research explores and describes the differences in thesis supervision from the perspectives of supervisors and doctoral students, by gender, area of knowledge, and stage of the dissertation. The analyzed styles are directing, guiding, and non-intervening. To evaluate these styles, a survey was completed by 267 thesis supervisors and 285 doctoral students. The results indicate that both groups reported perceiving, in order of preponderance, the guiding, directing, and non-intervening styles. The area of knowledge also influences the supervisory style. For both groups, the directing style is present more in the natural sciences than in the social sciences. Doctoral students tend to need greater guidance and orientation from their supervisors, since they define their supervisors as mostly non-intervening.]]></p></abstract>
