La edad, el género, la trayectoria escolar previa, los ingresos familiares y la participación en la vida laboral de los alumnos, así como la escolaridad de sus padres son datos que, en este estudio, operan como indicadores del horizonte de oportunidades desde el que los individuos orientan sus acciones en el ámbito escolar. Las aspiraciones educativas se conforman en un marco valorativo social, según las condiciones y características personales que dan especificidad a las relaciones que establece cada individuo en el contexto en que se desenvuelve. Se analiza la relación de los datos mencionados, con la probabilidad de logro académico en un grupo de sujetos que postuló para ingresar a la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana en el otoño de 1991.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract This article suggests that data on students&#8217; social conditions and characteristics permit identifying fundamental elements that support their educational aspirations. Students&#8217; age, gender, academic trajectory, family income, and participation in employment, as well as their parents&#8217; educational level, are data that operate in this study as indicators of the horizon of opportunities that orient student actions in the school setting. Educational aspirations are formed in a value-based social framework, according to the personal characteristics and conditions that determine the relations individuals establish in their context. An analysis is made of these data, along with the probability of academic attainment in a group of students entering Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana in the fall of 1991.]]></p></abstract>
