La identificación de las zonas potenciales de recarga es una tarea crucial, especialmente en ciudades como Siguatepeque en donde el agua subterránea es actualmente la fuente más importante de abastecimiento para la población. En el presente estudio se determinan las zonas potenciales de recarga de agua subterránea (ZPRAS) del acuífero de Siguatepeque mediante un análisis multicriterio basado en el Proceso Analítico Jerárquico (AHP), además, se empleó técnicas de teledetección y Sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIG). Se utilizaron seis criterios: geología, densidad de lineamientos, pendiente, densidad de drenaje, tipo de suelo y uso del suelo. Mediante el AHP se asignaron ponderaciones a cada criterio y se definen diferentes clases de acuerdo con su grado de influencia relativa sobre el potencial de recarga. El estudio revela que el 28% del área total presenta un potencial de recarga alto, 40% medio y el 32% bajo. La validación en campo muestra que el 83% de los pozos perennes se encontraron en las zonas identificadas con un potencial de recarga alto. La validación de las zonas con un potencial de recarga bajo no fue posible debido a la falta de pozos de observación en estas áreas. Finalmente, se presenta una zonificación especial de las áreas con un potencial de recarga alto para facilitar la interpretación y la toma de decisiones en cuanto al diseño e implementación de estrategias para la conservación de las aguas subterráneas y el manejo sostenible del acuífero de Siguatepeque.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT To manage groundwater effectively, it is necessary to have information about the hydrogeological environment that can guide the decision-making process. The identification of potential recharge zones is a crucial task, especially in cities like Siguatepeque where groundwater is currently the most important source of water supply for the population. In the present study, the potential groundwater recharge zones (PGWRZ) of the Siguatepeque aquifer are determined through a multicriteria analysis based on the Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP). In addition, remote sensing techniques and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) were used. Six criteria were established: geology, lineament density, slope, drainage density, soil type, and land use. Through an AHP, weights were assigned to each criterion, and different classes were defined according to their relative influence on the recharge potential. The study revealed that 28% of the total area has a good recharge potential, 40% medium and 32% low. Field validation shows that 83% of the monitored perennial wells were found in areas identified with a good recharge potential. Validation of low recharge potential zones was not possible due to the lack of observation wells in these areas. Finally, a special zoning of areas with a high recharge potential is presented to facilitate interpretation and decision-making regarding the design and implementation of strategies for the conservation of groundwater and the sustainable management of the Siguatepeque aquifer.]]></p></abstract>
