The objective of this research is to analyze how dendrochronological techniques have been applied for estimating hazards associated with rainfall events (floods and mass movement) in mountain areas. The search was performed regarding the use of dendrochronological techniques until 2022 by using the Scopus and Web of Science databases. One hundred and 174 publications were retrieved, and the topics addressed were a) the determination of rainfall thresholds, b) the analysis and reconstruction of hydrogeomorphological processes (floods and landslides) and c) the influence of meteorological, climatological and climate change phenomena on the occurrence of hazardous events in mountain areas. The integration of dendrochronological techniques has been useful in identifying the characteristics of the dynamics and influence of hydrological processes, as well as the reconstruction and evaluation of the magnitude of hazardous events. The reviewed literature shows an increase of research on hazards associated with extraordinary rainfall. There are few hazard studies, however, in intertropical zones. This constitutes a research line that must be developed to manage the hazards and their associated risks in these poorly studied geographic areas.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN Los desastres causados por precipitaciones extremas han aumentado a nivel mundial en magnitud y frecuencia. El objetivo de esta investigación es analizar cómo se han aplicado técnicas dendrocronológicas en la estimación de peligros asociados a eventos pluviométricos (inundaciones y remoción en masa) en zonas de montaña. Se realizó la búsqueda del uso de técnicas dendrocronológicas en la estimación de peligros hasta el año 2022. Esta búsqueda se realizó en las bases de datos Scopus y Web of Science. Se recuperaron 174 publicaciones. Los temas abordados fueron: a) determinación de umbrales de precipitaciones, b) análisis y reconstrucción de procesos hidrogeomorfológicos (inundaciones, remoción en masa) y c) influencia de fenómenos meteorológicos, climatológicos y de cambio climático en la ocurrencia de eventos peligrosos en zonas montañosas. La integración de técnicas dendrocronológicas ha sido útil en la identificación de las características de la dinámica e influencia de los procesos hidrológicos, en la reconstrucción y evaluación de la magnitud de eventos peligrosos. La literatura revisada muestra un aumento de la investigación sobre los peligros asociados con las lluvias extraordinarias. Sin embargo, existen pocos estudios de peligros en zonas intertropicales. Se identifica una línea de investigación que se debe consolidar en el tema de gestión de la peligrosidad y sus riesgos asociados en estas áreas geográficas, las cuales están poco estudiadas.]]></p></abstract>
