Tanto las zonas de debilidad preexistentes, como las fracturas de enfriamiento, pueden condicionar en superficie la configuración de importantes sistemas de fallas. En especial, es importante el estudio del papel de las fracturas de enfriamiento en la reactivación de fallas por tres razones: 1. Son muy numerosas en las rocas volcánicas; 2. Las fracturas verticales, como las generadas por enfriamiento, tienen muy baja tendencia al deslizamiento, y, 3. A menudo se les encuentra con rumbos y estrías en varias direcciones que en conjunto son difíciles de interpretar en términos de la mecánica de su formación. Este trabajo presenta un ejemplo de un sistema de falla que se activó sobre un campo volcánico en Santa María, San Luis Potosí, México. Estudiamos la edad, geometría, actividad y cinemática de las fallas normales del SFSLT (Sistema de Fallas San Luis-Tepehuanes) en Santa María del Río, San Luis Potosí, en el centro de México, así como los mecanismos del fallamiento y su interacción con estructuras preexistentes, como son las fracturas de enfriamiento de geometría ortogonal y poligonal. Se eligieron tres sitios para la medición de datos estructurales. Los resultados demuestran que las fallas mayores se orientan en dirección NW-SE preferencialmente y las fallas menores muestran rumbos en todas las direcciones (0° a 360°). El fallamiento produjo el basculamiento de los estratos, en el que las unidades más antiguas tienen echados más altos (20° a 25°) que las unidades más jóvenes (~15°). La presencia de estrías curvadas, líneas de deslizamiento superpuestas y estrías paralelas a la intersección entre dos planos, posiblemente fueron causadas por la interacción entre las fracturas preexistentes al momento de la reactivación. Con todo lo anterior y la ayuda de la visualización de datos con el software ReActiva 2.4 (Alaniz-Álvarez et al., 2000; Tolson et al., 2001), proponemos que el fallamiento inició a profundidad y cuando avanzó hacia la superficie se enlazó con las fracturas de enfriamiento, dando lugar a la configuración actual del SFSLT.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT The reactivation of pre-existing fractures is an important issue in the study of nucleation, union, growth, and evolution of fault systems. Pre-existing zones of weakness, such as cooling fractures, can determine the configuration of important fault systems. In particular, it is important to study the role of cooling fractures in the reactivation of faults for three reasons: first, there are many cooling fractures in volcanic rocks; second, the vertical fractures have a low tendency to slip; and third, there are many strikes and striae in several directions, making it difficult to interpret their mechanical origin. This paper presents an example of a fault system that overprinted on a volcanic field in Santa María del Río, San Luis Potosí, Mexico. We studied the age, geometry, activity, and kinematics of the SLTFS (San Luis-Tepehuanes Fault System) located in Santa Maria del Rio, in central Mexico, as well as the fault mechanisms and interaction with pre-existing structures, like orthogonal and polygonal cooling joints. Three sites were chosen for the measurement of structural data. The results indicate that the major faults have a NW-SE preferential trend and the minor faults show strikes in all azimuths. This faulting caused the tilt of strata. The older units have higher dips (20° to 25°) than the younger ones (~15°). Curved, superimposed slickenlines and striae parallel to the intersection of two fault planes are probably the result of the interaction with pre-existing fractures during reactivation. Based on these results as well as calculations using the ReActiva 2.4 software (Alaniz-Álvarez et al., 2000; Tolson et al., 2001), we propose that faulting began at depth, and propagated through the cooling joints while advancing to the surface in the current SLTFS configuration.]]></p></abstract>
