En ciertos miembros de la familia Solanaceae, se han identificado propiedades anticancerígenas potenciales a través de estudios in vitro. Por lo tanto, el presente trabajo se centró en la identificación de biomoléculas con actividad antineoplásica en el extracto etanólico del fruto de Solanum elaeagnifolium. Los resultados mostraron que dicho extracto presentó actividad citotóxica frente a células de cáncer de mama triple negativo (MDA-MB-231). Las pruebas fitoquímicas demostraron la presencia de taninos, flavonoides, terpenos, glicósidos cardenólidos y saponinas terpénicas. Las últimas, fueron aisladas como una mezcla de saponinas crudas y se observó que presentaban una CI50 de 14.5 &#956;g/mL frente a las células MDA-MB-231. La mortalidad en fibroblastos embrionarios de ratón a esta concentración se mantuvo por debajo del 20%, indicando selectividad por las células tumorales. La muerte celular inducida mostró un patrón de degradación del ADN y características morfológicas típicas de la apoptosis. Sin embargo, se requieren más estudios para aclarar el mecanismo de acción preciso inducido por la fracción de saponinas terpénicas obtenidas.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract In Mexico, there are at least 300 species of plants, grouped into 90 families, believed to have cancer-fighting properties. In certain members of the Solanaceae family, potential anticancer properties have been identified through in vitro studies. Therefore, this study focused on identifying biomolecules with antineoplastic activity in the ethanolic extract of the fruit of Solanum elaeagnifolium. The results showed that this extract exhibited cytotoxic activity against triple-negative breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231). Additionally, phytochemicals such as tannins, flavonoids, terpenes, cardenolide glycosides, and terpenic saponins were identified. The terpenic saponins were isolated as a crude mixture and exhibited an IC50 of 14.5 &#956;g/mL against MDA-MB-231 cells. The mortality in mouse embryonic fibroblasts at this concentration remained below 20%, indicating selectivity for tumor cells. The induced cell death exhibited a pattern of DNA degradation and morphological features typical of apoptosis. However, further studies are needed to clarify the precise mechanism of action induced by the obtained terpenic saponin fraction.]]></p></abstract>
