About 463 million people worldwide live with DM. Type 2 DM (T2DM) is the most common in 90% of cases; is a complex metabolic disorder in which beta cells do not produce enough insulin and/or the body is resistant to insulin action. Oral antidiabetic drugs are part of the treatment to reduce and control this metabolic disorder; however, they have side effects. People with DM use medicinal plants as complementary treatment or alternative before medication is prescribed or together with the medication. Tectaria heracleifolia (Willd.) Underw. is a fern that has been reported in ethnobotanical studies to treat renal disorders, acne, and diabetes. This study is the first to evaluate the in vivo hypoglycemic effect of T. heracleifolia in mice with nicotinamide/streptozotocin (NA/STZ) induced T2DM using the commercial oral hypoglycemic agent glibenclamide as a positive control and 0.9% saline solution as negative control. Tests were conducted using normoglycemic mice and hyperglycemic mice. Both control and doses of 30, 100, and 300 mg/kg of the aqueous extract of T. heracleifolia were orally administered to mice and glucose assessment was performed at the following time points: 0, 1.5, 3, 5, and 7 h after extract administration. Acute toxicity tests were performed based on Lorke's methodology. Qualitative tests were performed to detect the main groups of secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, glycosides, terpenes, and flavonoids. In the hyperglycemic animals, a statistically significant difference (p &lt;0.05) was observed in the groups that received 100 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg of the aqueous extract when compared to the negative control. The presence of glycosides, phenolic compounds, and flavonoids in the aqueous extract could be related with the hypoglycemic activity. The extract is considered safe as the acute toxicity test showed a median lethal dose value (LD50) of 5065.177 mg/kg. The findings of the study support the traditional use of T. heracleifolia as a hypoglycemic agent in T2DM.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen La diabetes mellitus (DM) es una de las principales preocupaciones sanitarias a nivel mundial. Unos 463 millones de personas en todo el mundo padecen DM. La DM de tipo 2 (DMT2) es la más común en el 90% de los casos; es un trastorno metabólico complejo en el que las células beta no producen suficiente insulina y/o el organismo es resistente a la acción de la insulina. Los fármacos antidiabéticos orales forman parte del tratamiento para reducir y controlar este trastorno metabólico; sin embargo, tienen efectos secundarios. Las personas con DM utilizan las plantas medicinales como tratamiento complementario o alternativo antes de que se les prescriba la medicación o junto con ella. Tectaria heracleifolia (Willd.) Underw. es un helecho del que se ha informado en estudios etnobotánicos para tratar trastornos renales, acné y diabetes. Este estudio es el primero que evalúa el efecto hipoglucémico in vivo de T. heracleifolia en ratones con DMT2 inducida por nicotinamida/estreptozotocina (NA/STZ), utilizando el agente hipoglucémico oral comercial glibenclamida como control positivo y solución salina al 0.9% como control negativo. Las pruebas se realizaron con ratones normoglucémicos e hiperglucémicos. Tanto el control como las dosis de 30, 100 y 300 mg/kg del extracto acuoso de T. heracleifolia se administraron por vía oral a los ratones y la evaluación de la glucosa se realizó en los siguientes puntos temporales 0, 1.5, 3, 5 y 7 h después de la administración del extracto. Las pruebas de toxicidad aguda se realizaron según la metodología de Lorke. Se realizaron pruebas cualitativas para detectar los principales grupos de metabolitos secundarios, como alcaloides, glucósidos, terpenos y flavonoides. En los animales hiperglucémicos, se observó una diferencia estadísticamente significativa (p &lt;0.05) en los grupos que recibieron 100 mg/kg y 300 mg/kg del extracto acuoso en comparación con el control negativo. La presencia de glucósidos, compuestos fenólicos y flavonoides en el extracto acuoso podría estar relacionada con la actividad hipoglucémica. El extracto se considera seguro, ya que la prueba de toxicidad aguda mostró un valor de dosis letal media (DL50) de 5065.177 mg/kg. Los resultados del estudio apoyan el uso tradicional de T. heracleifolia como agente hipoglucemiante en la DMT2.]]></p></abstract>
